Good evening, today is Monday, August 15th and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Four people were killed and one injured in a three-vehicle crash north of Sanderson Saturday evening resulting from a fleeing traffic violator.
The D.P.S. said Troopers stopped a car on Highway 90 but it sped off, turning north on Highway 285 where it crossed the center line and crashed into another vehicle.
Two in the fleeing car and two in the car it crashed into were killed and a passenger in the fleeing vehicle was injured.
A third car passing the collision scene was damaged from accident debris but the driver was uninjured. All three vehicles burst into flames as a result of the accident.
The Alpine City Council Tuesday has scheduled public hearings along with second-reading action on the budget and first reading for a new tax rate for the fiscal year beginning October 1.
The council approved the 15.4-million-dollar budget at its meeting August 2 and City Manager Megan Antrim said she would propose a tax rate at the meeting Tuesday.
Antrim said her figures were somewhat different from those presented by Tax Assessor-Collector Sylvia Vega and she would work to get them in line.
The current tax rate is 50.8345 cents per 100-dollar valuation but most agree it will have to be higher to deal with the inflation currently wreaking havoc across the county.
Council also has discussed the need to increase some fees for services such as utilities to bring revenue more in line with expenses.
Most taxing authorities are struggling with budgets in light of rapidly-increasing prices.
The school district earlier approved a budget with a $300,000 deficit and agreed to work in the coming months to bring costs down so it eventually can be balanced.
The county approved a balanced budget but Treasurer Julie Morton told us she used fund balances to finance many items and praised department heads for bringing down costs.
In other action, council is expected to approve the annual audit contract with Gibson, Ruddock, Patterson of El Paso and the appointment of Katie Santos to the Parks and Recreation Board.
Council meets at 5:30 Tuesday evening at the Council Chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue.
The Veale Ranch and Allen Cattle Ranch were champions at the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo last weekend at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
The Veale Ranch is located in Aledo west of Fort Worth and is owned by P.M.B. Land and Cattle.
The Allen Cattle Ranch in Friona southwest of Amarillo is owned and operated by the Allen Family.
Both are cow and calf operations with stocker businesses.
More results should be released later this week.
The Big Bend Arts Council’ show titled simply “Landscape” will continue until September 13 at its two adjoining art Galleries downtown on Holland Avenue.
The show at the Gallery on the Square and Catchlight Gallery features both local and out-of-town artists who concentrate their art on painting interesting scenery like mountains.
The galleries will host a reception on Saturday, August 27, coinciding with its “Plein Air” weekend.
Plein Air simply means working outdoors to paint or otherwise represent landscapes.
Moeller said plein air artists will do their work outdoors at various locations such as the Chihuahua Desert Research Institute near Fort Davis August 26 through 28.
Art in the exhibit features landscapes in the Big Bend Area as well as Ghost Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Cuatro personas murieron y una resultó herida en un accidente de tres vehículos al norte de Sanderson el sábado en la noche como resultado de un infractor de tránsito que huía.
El D.P.S. dijo que los policías detuvieron un automóvil en la autopista 90, pero aceleró, girando hacia el norte en la autopista 285, donde cruzó la línea central y chocó contra otro vehículo.
Dos en el automóvil que huía y dos en el automóvil contra el que se estrelló murieron y un pasajero en el vehículo que huía resultó herido.
Un tercer automóvil que pasó por la escena de la colisión resultó dañado por los escombros del accidente, pero el conductor resultó ileso. Los tres vehículos estallaron en llamas como resultado del accidente.
El Concejo Municipal de Alpine programó el martes audiencias públicas junto con una acción de segunda lectura sobre el presupuesto y la primera lectura de una nueva tasa impositiva para el año fiscal que comienza el 1 de octubre.
El consejo aprobó el presupuesto de 15.4 millones de dólares en su reunión del 2 de agosto y la administradora de la ciudad, Megan Antrim, dijo que propondría una tasa impositiva en la reunión del martes.
