Services for Odilia Vasquez Merino of Alpine will at 9 Wednesday at Our Lady of Peace
Catholic Church.
She died peacefully Tuesday evening after a short illness. She was 74.
Odilia was born January 21, 1949, in Alpine where she spent most of her life. Before her failing health, she enjoyed music, dancing and socializing.
She was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and had a strong devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Odilia was predeceased by an infant son, her mother and siblings. Surviving are her husband Jose Merino, a brother and two sisters.
Services have been entrusted to Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.
Brewster County Commissioners in a special meeting Friday afternoon approved a “proposed”
tax rate for the next fiscal year of 36-point-6547 cents per 100-dollar valuation.
The idea for a tri-county emergency medical service has been around here since December, 2021, after Alpine Ambulance head Mike Scudder died.
That’s when Greg Henington, who had been fire chief and E.M.S. director in Terlingua, provided a temporary replacement service until Emergent Air could take over.
Henington, who now is Brewster County Judge, forwarded the tri-county idea at that time.
The discussion reappeared last week in a story about Jeff Davis County E.M.S. moving to a paid service as reported in the Big Bend Sentinel.
The paper reports E.M.S. Director Peggy Fonseca is in the process of turning the Jeff Davis service from primarily a volunteer service to a paid service.
Since taking over from Vicky Fowler when she retired last year, Fonseca reports that 90 percent now is paid staff.
The county is working on a new bunkhouse for first responders connected to the existing fire and E.M.S. facility to give full-time responders a place to stay while on duty.
Fonseca told us state legislation crafted by Representative Eddie Morales and Senator César Blanco can help create a tri-county E.M.S. but she said that could be two years off.
It allows the Big Bend Hospital District to work together and, while Jeff Davis County is not part of that district, the three counties could reach a contract agreement.

The Alpine Police Department has posted a Notice of Abandoned Motor Vehicle Auction
program for unclaimed vehicles in its impound lot.
Owners can claim their vehicle by paying all towing, preservation, storage and other charges and providing proof of ownership.
If vehicles are not claimed, the Police Department will have a public auction at 10 a.m. Saturday on Avenue I, which becomes Cemetery Road, next to the Hal Flanders Recycling Center.
Viewing of the vehicles will be from 9 am until the auction begins.
The posting shows 14 vehicles from 1994 to 2017 models. See the posting on the Alpine Police Facebook Page.
The Alpine Police Department has a full-time telecommunications officer position open.

The Marfa Studio of Arts has begun receiving donated artworks for its upcoming “Little Pieces
of Art” auction in support of its children’s art program, the Studio in the Elementary.
Existing works and specially-created works may be donated and any art medium will be accepted.
Works cannot be larger than 24 inches in any direction.
Deliver art works to the Marfa Studio of Arts from 1 to 5 today through Saturday and Tuesday to Saturday next week.

Servicios para Odilia Vásquez Merino de Alpine será el miercoles a las 9 en la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de la Paz.
Murió en paz el martes por la noche después de una breve enfermedad. Ella tenía 74 años. Odilia nació el 21 de enero de 1949 en Alpine, donde pasó la mayor parte de su vida. Antes de su enfermedad, disfrutaba de la música, el baile y la socialización.
Era miembro de la Iglesia Católica de Nuestra Señora de la Paz y tenía una gran devoción a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Odilia falleció despues que un hijo pequeño, su madre y sus hermanos. Le sobreviven su esposo José Merino, un hermano y dos hermanas.
Los servicios han sido confiados a Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.
La idea de un servicio médico de emergencia de tres condados ha existido aquí desde diciembre del 2021, después de que el jefe de Alpine Ambulance, Mike Scudder, muriera.

El Departamento de Policía de Alpine ha publicado un Aviso para su programa de Subasta de Vehículos Abandonados para vehículos no reclamados en su lote incautado.
Los propietarios pueden reclamar su vehículo pagando todos los cargos de remolque, conservación, almacenamiento y otros gastos y presentando prueba de propiedad. Si no se reclaman los vehículos, el Departamento de Policía realizará una subasta pública el sábado a las 10 a. m. en Avenue I, que se convierte en Cemetery Road, al lado del Centro de Reciclaje Hal Flanders.
La visualización de los vehículos será desde las 9 de la mañana hasta que comience la subasta. La publicación muestra 14 vehículos de modelos año 1994 a 2017.
