A weak cold front moved into the region today (MONDAY) and will bring with it slightly cooler temps this week.
According to the National Weather Service office in Midland, afternoon highs tomorrow (TUESDAY) will reach the mid-80s and the lower-90s for much of the Big Bend region.
Justin Lopez is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. He says with the cold front there’s also a chance of some rainstorms over the next few days.
LOPEZ1: “We will have some southerly flow bringing in some moisture. That moisture interacts with the higher terrain out there, it can trigger shower and thunderstorm activity as well. So we’re seeing a rain chance pretty much throughout the rest of this week, at least some kind of rain chance out there for the rest of the week.” (0:18)
Lopez says it’s not likely that the storms will be dangerous or cause any damage in the area.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), head to the Davis Mountains State Park to take in the perseid meteor shower.
The major summer meteor shower, which will see shooting stars dash across the nighttime sky, will peak on Tuesday, August 12. And you can catch the celestial show that day, from 10 to 11 p.m., at the far end of the Skyline Drive at the Davis Mountains State Park.
During the event, park rangers will also point out constellations in view and share other tidbits about stars and the vastness of space.
The event is free for campers or Indian Lodge guests. Day passes are $6 per adult, or free for the carload with an active state park pass.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is moving forward with plans to set up a detention center in West Texas that could become become the largest facility of its kind in the United States
According to the El Paso Times, the facility – known as Camp East Montana – will be housed on Fort Bliss land. It’s expected to begin operations on August 18.
The facility will open with a 1,000-person capacity, which ICE says they’ll slowly expand to 5,000.

Registration is now open for the Marfa100, the annual road race that sees cyclists race down a scenic stretch of 2810.
Cyclists can choose between a 100K race, and a 50K fun ride.

This weekend, K-V-L-F’s Tejano Sundays celebrates its 10 year anniversary!
The radio show will mark the occasion with a full day of fun and music, including a cornhole tournament, a carshow, and, of course, plenty of Tejano music to dance to – featuring La Tropa F, Joanna Rae and the Puro Party All-Starz, and several DJs as well.
The 10-year anniversary celebration takes place Saturday, August 16 at Skelton’s Runway.

Next month, head to Fort Stockton for Barrio Fest – a celebration of the Hispanic culture in the region.
The three-day event begins September 11 and includes a baseball game, a car show, and a 5K run. There will also be live entertainment, featuring Mariachi Santa Cruz from Presidio, and La Juventud Norteña and Tropicalisímo Apache.

Un frente frío débil llegó a la región hoy y traerá consigo temperaturas ligeramente más bajas esta semana.
Según la oficina del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional en Midland, las temperaturas máximas de la tarde de mañana alcanzarán los 27 y los 32 grados Celsius en gran parte de la región de Big Bend.
Justin López, meteorólogo del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, afirma que, con el frente frío, también existe la posibilidad de tormentas en los próximos días.
Lopez cito “Tendremos un flujo del sur que traerá algo de humedad. Esta humedad, al interactuar con las elevaciones del terreno, puede provocar chubascos y tormentas eléctricas. Por lo tanto, prevemos probabilidad de lluvia durante prácticamente todo el resto de la semana, y al menos algo de probabilidad de lluvia para el resto de la semana”. (0:18)
López afirma que no es probable que las tormentas sean peligrosas ni causen daños en la zona.

Mañana (MARTES), dirígase al Parque Estatal Davis Mountains para disfrutar de la lluvia de meteoros de las perseidas.
La principal lluvia de meteoros del verano, que verá estrellas fugaces surcar el cielo nocturno, alcanzará su máximo esplendor el martes 12 de agosto. Podrás disfrutar del espectáculo celestial ese mismo día, de 10:00 a 11:00, en el extremo de Skyline Drive, en el Parque Estatal Davis Mountains.
Durante el evento, los guardabosques también señalarán las constelaciones a la vista y compartirán otras curiosidades sobre las estrellas y la inmensidad del espacio.
El evento es gratuito para campistas o huéspedes del Indian Lodge. Los pases diarios cuestan $6 por adulto o son gratuitos para todo el vehículo con un pase activo para el parque estatal.

El Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas está avanzando con los planes para establecer un centro de detención en el oeste de Texas que podría convertirse en la instalación más grande de su tipo en los Estados Unidos.
