Good evening, today is Thursday, August 11th and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Brewster County Tourism Bureau will become a sponsor of the Marfa Lights Festival scheduled for September 2 to 4 this year.
The festival celebrates the Marfa Lights, a top reason to visit the area, drawing visitors from around all over for a chance to see the unexplained phenomena.
Accounts of the strange spectacle just east of Marfa began during the 19th Century and continue to this day.
The seemingly source-less lights dance on the horizon southeast of town, an area that is nearly uninhabited and extremely difficult to cross.
The mystery lights are sometimes red, sometimes blue, sometimes white and usually appear randomly throughout the night, no matter the season or the weather.
Some believe they are just headlights of cars on U.S. Highway 67 from Presidio but they appeared before the first automobile and the first cars did not have headlights.
And they do not appear every night.
We’ll have more details of the festival as the time for it approaches.
The Alpine community is coming together to support Alpine Independent School District Students through various supply drives.
McDonald’s has a donation box in the lobby, Tallent Roofing donated 144 headphones to Alpine Elementary and the Alpine Lions Club has donated 30 clear backpacks.
Alpine Fitness and the Alpine Police Department will have a 5-K and one-mile run to raise funds with entries at 20 dollars or donation based.
The “Let’s Give Every Kid the Same Starting Line” run will be at 8 a.m. Saturday at Kokernot C
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart said there have been many more donation efforts, highlighting the strength of the Alpine community.
Rinehart: “Some of these amazing things that are happening from parents, community volunteers, organizations, businesses coming out and supporting schools. It is absolutely a community-wide effort to do the best for our kids.”
Other efforts at the school district include the renaming of the High School Gym to become the Wilson-Sties Memorial Court and the renovation of the Alpine Elementary Library.
Dr. Rinehart also said there is an effort between Alpine community projects, Sul Ross and Big Bend Regional Medical Center to bring on a new daycare center.
It potentially would be within Alpine I.S.D. for children six months to three years old, filling the vacancy the community center left when it shut down years ago.
The Marathon Public Library is continuing its Family Place Libraries Learn and Play Series with their second session at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Marathon Baptist Fellowship Hall.
The session will last about 90 minutes and focus on speech, hearing and language development with speech therapist April Dabbs.
Children will be able to play, move and socialize using their imaginations while parents meet families, explore toys and talk with community professionals about their child’s development.

A Brewster County justice of the peace currently is seeking qualified applicants for the position of court clerk-slash-administrative assistant. The position will be open until it is filled.
An application and job description can be printed from the Brewster County Texas website under employment or be picked up at the Justice of the Peace office at the Courthouse.
They can be submitted along with a resume in person or call 837-6214.
