Hello, I’m Z, and this is the local and area news.
Services will be May 3 for long-time Alpine resident Travis Tucker. The businessman and former city councilor died Thursday at his home among family.
He was born in Bandera where he attended high school and would meet and later marry Joslyn Joyce “J.J.” Wright in 1956.
Travis’s work led him to West Texas where he fell in love with Alpine and moved the family here in 1968.
He established several businesses, including T&S Contractors dirt work and paving, Lone Star Beer Sales and Rio Concrete with three plants serving the tri-county area.
After his business days were over, he continued to work into his early 80s operating heavy equipment on area ranches.
Travis was preceded in death by a son and grandson. Surviving are his wife, a son, a sister, five grandchildren as well as 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Alpine from 1 to 3 May 3. A celebration of life gathering will follow to be announced on a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to a charity of choice in Travis’s memory.
The Brewster County Commissioners Court Tuesday voted to provide 50 thousand dollars to help fund a community child-care center at the Alpine School Administration Building.
Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart made creation of the day-care center one of her first official acts.
The Alpine City Council recently sent its 25 thousand dollars to participate in the project.
Rinehart recognized something organizations like the Alpine Business Alliance knew, that it is hard to attract teachers and other workers to Alpine if they can’t get care for younger children.
In other action, commissioners approved a budget amendment to reflect that the Alpine Fire Department had finally sold a maintenance-plagued ladder truck for scrap.
The truck sad idle for years for need of maintenance, was finally taken to an out-of-town garage for repairs and returned to Alpine, only to quickly break down again.
The county recently created the city-county Alpine Emergency Board to take over operation of the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
The city had run the department and responded to calls in the city and north Brewster County and the county paid the city for calls outside the city limits.
And court approved re-appointment of Albert Lujan as a member of the Emergency Services Board.
The has four members on the new board and the county three. Two of the three were up for re-appointment, Lujan and Emergency Services Director Stephany Elmore.
But Elmore is leaving the county to become a deputy U.S. Marshal.
Our Congressman Tony Gonzales has introduced legislation condemning the Biden administration’s failure to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders.
The resolution reaffirms House Republicans’ commitment to protecting the homeland, ensuring immigration laws are enforced.
It also urges the Biden administration to correct its failed immigration policies and mitigate the national security threats that have ensued.
Gonzales said Americans are fed up with the broken immigration policies and see first-hand every day the border crisis is in our backyard.
The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute has invited Sul Ross Professor Dr. Chris Ritzi to be its Guest Lecturer at the Roger Conant Distinguished Guest Lecturer Program Thursday.
He will speak at 7 Thursday at the Crowley Theater in Marfa. Doors will open at 3:30.

También insta a la administración Biden a corregir sus fallidas políticas de inmigración y mitigar las amenazas a la seguridad nacional que han seguido.
Gonzales dijo que los estadounidenses están hartos de las políticas de inmigración fallidas y ven de primera mano todos los días que la crisis fronteriza está en nuestro patio trasero.
