Good evening, today is Friday, April 7th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Texas Legislature passed two measures Thursday that could cause a conflict over school funding.
The Senate passed Senate Bill Eight, which would create education savings accounts to help give parents the right to choose private schools.
On the same day, the House approved an amendment that would prohibit the use of state funds for school vouchers or other similar programs.
Alpine School Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart thanked our representative Eddie Morales for helping pass the amendment, which carried 86 to 52.
She said it was a true bipartisan effort with votes from both Republicans and Democrats.
The amendment, brought by Representative Abel Herrero of Robstown (RAHBS-town) prohibits the use of state funds for “school vouchers or similar programs.”
Morales told us the state has defunded schools less and less every year, putting the load more and more on local taxpayers. Dr. Rinehart has expressed the same view.
The Senate bill now moves to the House for its action.
If the amendment survives and the House passes its education bill, those differences will have to be worked out in a conference committee.

Alpine Independent School District is attempting to increase attendance to help in their ongoing challenge of increasing funding.
The City of Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful are distributing recycling totes through the 2022 Texas Recycles Day Grant.
Keep Alpine Beautiful reached out to the Alpine Food Pantry and distributed the totes with the goal of inviting residents to recycle and make recycling more accessible for the community.
The grant from the Arca Continental Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Sustainability Department gave Keep Alpine Beautiful nearly five thousand dollars to purchase 400 totes and comes.
The totes have the items accepted at the center listed on a sticker placed on the side, helping with the recycling and trash sorting.

The McDonald Observatory and numerous partners joined in celebrating the first anniversary of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve this week.
Covering more than 15,000 square miles in Texas and Mexico, the Reserve is the largest dark sky place in the world certified by the International Dark-Sky Association.
McDonald Observatory’s ongoing conservation work, including its support of the Reserve, has helped maintains the darkest skies of any research observatory in the continental United States.
Gilberto Carrillo is the new chief for the Marfa Police Department.
The Big Bend Sentinel reports that Carrillo had been serving as interim police chief since the sudden resignation recently of Steve Marque.
Like Chief Marque, Carrillo has been with the department since its 2017 reformation.
City Manager Mandy Roane said Carrillo is a natural fit for the leadership position.
Roane said the new chief has a deep love of the community, especially its kids, and she thinks he will be a great fit for the role.
Carrillo told the paper he plans to uphold the previous chief’s tenants of community engagement and transparency.
He said the office is open for everyone to walk in at any time and speak to officers, keeping the same transparency with the community.

La Legislatura de Texas aprobó dos medidas el jueves que podrían causar un conflicto sobre la financiación de las escuelas.
El Senado aprobó el Proyecto de Ley Senatorial Ocho, que crearía cuentas de ahorro para la educación para ayudar a los padres a tener derecho a elegir escuelas privadas.
El mismo día, la Cámara aprobó una enmienda que prohibiría el uso de fondos estatales para vales escolares u otros programas similares.
La superintendente de las escuelas de Alpine, la Dra. Michelle Rinehart, agradeció a nuestro representante Eddie Morales por ayudar a aprobar la enmienda, que pasó de 86 a 52.

La Ciudad de Alpine y Keep Alpine Beautiful están distribuyendo contenedores de reciclaje a través de la Subvención del Día del Reciclaje de Texas 2022.
Keep Alpine Beautiful estaba en el Alpine Food Pantry y distribuyó las bolsas con el objetivo de invitar a los residentes a reciclar y hacer que el reciclaje sea más accesible para la comunidad.
