Good evening, today is Thursday, April 7th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A celebration of life memorial service for Irma Irelda Segura Luna Morales of Marfa will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
She died Sunday at age 77 with her family at her side.
Burial will be at Merced Cemetery followed by a gathering at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
Irma was born in Marfa on November 10, 1944, and worked for many years as a bookkeeper and accountant for Pierce Motors.
She also worked as a cashier at Sandy’s and for the tomato farm.
She is survived by two sons, a sister, a brother, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

It’s now official. We got word about this about two weeks ago saying the official word would come now.
The McDonald Observatory and others released a statement Thursday morning that the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve has been approved.
Joining the announcement was the International Dark-Sky Association, which issued the official certification.
The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountain Preserve also joined in the announcement.
Texas Master Naturalists, Big Bend Conservation Alliance and other civic organizations also have contributed to the program.
The new reserve becomes the largest in the world at 15 thousand acres and crosses the international border with participants in West Texas and northern Mexico.
It includes several Texas counties around the observatory and protected lands in Coahuila and Chihuahua.
Cities, counties and other civic bodies in West Texas have adopted new dark skies ordinances to keep pace with technical changes in the industry.
Dark Skies Association Director of Conservation Ashley Wilson said certification of this Reserve is truly an historic moment for the dark-sky movement.
The Big Bend Sentinel this week published answers from Big Bend Regional Medical Center on issues it had addressed in earlier stories.
Hospital C.E.O. Rick Flores was interviewed this week with Marketing Director Ruth Hucke present.
Flores said the hospital had begun the process of separating the medical-surgical unit from the emergency room with the new unit scheduled to open April 25.
The department had been combined with the Emergency Room since the end of January, cutting down available space for E.R. patients.
He said several new nurses are beginning work and the last of them would start the week before that unit opens.
Flores said having to send delivery room patients to other hospitals because of nursing shortages is going to, as he said, “have challenges for another month.”
O.B. nurses are “tough to come by,” he said.
To address nursing shortages, Flores said he is working with Sul Ross State University, Southwest University in El Paso and Workforce Solutions to look for new talent.
Alpine Public Library’s Alpine’s Talented Stars fundraiser will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kokernot Outdoor Theatre.
Tickets, which include Roux Alpine gumbo and dessert, are available now at the library at 35 dollars per couple, 20 for a single and seven for a child.
Beer, wine and water will be available for a donation. Food service will run from 5:45 to 6:45.
Tickets are available at the library. All event tickets purchased at the door and all voting tickets for the talent stars must be paid by cash or check.
