Good evening, today is Wednesday, April 6th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
With high winds and no rain in a long time, we have escaped any serious wildland fires so far this season, But Wednesday morning put a serious dent in that record.
Several fire and law enforcement agencies were called out to a fire on a bridge on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks eight miles west of Marathon at 8:30 Wednesday morning.
The Marathon Volunteer Fire Department, Alpine Volunteer Fire Department, Texas A&M Forest Service and Brewster County deputies all responded.
And a number of ranchers and other volunteers pitched in to help.
The fire was contained by about 1 p.m. despite high winds and dry conditions.
The fire was on the main line and all trains were rerouted until the tracks can be repaired. The cause of the fire was unknown and no injuries were reported.
The railroad reportedly is in process of replacing older creosote treated wooden ties with cement structures.
The Next Sul Ross Spotlight will be virtual from noon to 1 Friday with Dr. Lisa Sousa to discuss the next steps of engaging with students.
“Evolving toward Hyflex Courses and Multi-Modal Instruction” is an introductory session that will describe tools to engage with students using multimodal methods.
Participants will identify modalities of instruction which include Hyflex and give examples of applications that support mutli-modal engagement for students.
Participants also will describe outside-the-box opportunities for engagement with students.
Dr. Sousa is an assistant professor of education and the program specialist for the Educational Diagnostician Graduate Program for Sul Ross.
She is a practicing Educational Diagnostician with 19 years of assessment experience for children of all ages and ability levels.

Our Congressman Tony Gonzales and Republican colleagues have issued a statement after a briefing from the National Border Patrol Council this week.
Gonzales told fellow House members that this was “the grim realities of life for our Border Patrol agents on the frontlines of this border crisis.”
The briefing was on the impact once Title 42 is lifted, which the administration says it plans to do next month.
The action would take a toll on our agents and create a new incentive for migrants to make the life-threatening journey to and across the border.
He said the hottest months of the year are on the horizon and lifting the requirement to return crossers during the pandemic would double today’s already record numbers.
Gonzales and Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz have written to Secretaries Alejandro Mayorkas and Xavier Becerra to keep Title 42 in place
The City of Alpine will host a surplus car auction with vehicles from every department at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Alpine Recycle Center at 2705 Cemetery Road.
All vehicles will be available for bidding “as is” and once purchased the City of Alpine will deliver the vehicle immediately and all sales are final.
They currently have vehicles like a 1975 Ford Tractor, F-250 and F-350 Super Duties, Chevy Silverados, Dodge Chargers and more.

Varias agencias de policía y de bomberos fueron llamadas por un incendio en un puente en las vías del ferrocarril Union Pacific Railroad ocho millas al oeste de Marathon a las 8:30 de la mañana hoy.

Nuestro congresista Tony Gonzales y sus colegas republicanos emitieron una declaración después de una sesión informativa del Consejo Nacional de la Patrulla Fronteriza esta semana.
Gonzales les dijo a sus compañeros miembros de la Cámara que esta era “la sombría realidad de la vida de nuestros agentes de la Patrulla Fronteriza en la primera línea de esta crisis fronteriza”.
La sesión informativa fue sobre el impacto una vez que se levante el Título 42, lo que la administración dice que planea hacer el próximo mes.
La acción afectaría a nuestros agentes y crearía un nuevo incentivo para que los migrantes realicen el peligroso viaje hacia y a través de la frontera.
