Big Bend National Park staff plan to initiate a 43-acre prescribed burn along the Rio Grande Wednesday and Thursday.
Fire managers will use prescribed fire as a natural resource habitat treatment to control exotic giant cane along the river corridor.
During this time, visitors will encounter temporary closures at the Daniel’s Ranch area, the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail and the Rio Grande Village Boat Launch.
Over several decades, the Rio Grande has become increasingly channelized, as invasive river cane forms dense thickets and traps sediment.
With the removal of the cane, the river can carry the sediment downstream, opening up gravel bars and widening flood plains again.

Only one race each will be in two local elections along with one Constitutional Amendment in the May 7 General Election in Alpine.
For the City of Alpine, Catherine Eaves and Amit Rangra square off for mayor. Incumbent Andy Ramos was term limited and could not run for re-election.
Councilors Chris Rodriguez and Martin Sandate are unopposed for re-election so those races were canceled.
At Alpine I.S.D., incumbent Mary McCallister faces challenger Elpidia Lujan for Place 7.
Place 5 incumbent Justin Cross chose not to run and Haley Babb is unopposed for that seat, so that election also was canceled.
Two seats were open for the Big Bend Regional Hospital District but incumbents Buddy Cavness and James “Cuatro” White the Fourth were both unopposed.
The one Constitutional Amendment on the ballot would reduce ad valorem school taxes for elderly and disabled citizens.
Busts of illegal river crossers is continuing its strong pace in the area as new records are set almost daily along the border.
A Brewster County deputy and U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehended nine illegal migrants south of Marathon Monday morning.
The suspects from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador were referred to Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
The City of Alpine will host a surplus car auction with vehicles from every department at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Alpine Recycle Center at 2705 Cemetery Road.
All vehicles will be available for bidding “as is” and the City of Alpine will deliver the vehicle immediately and all sales are final.
Vehicles for sale include a 1975 Ford Tractor, F-250 and F-350 Super Duties, Chevy Silverados, Dodge Chargers and more.

The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office has 9-1-1 dispatcher positions available and are looking for those who can be the voice that’s the calm in the storm.
Dispatch duties include receiving requests for police, fire and emergency medical services, dispatching public safety units and notifying other support services.
The successful candidate will have acceptable working knowledge of computer operations, stressing accuracy and speed, and be able to pass drug and psychological screening.
Beginning salary is 13.50 per hour and all training and certifications to be obtained are provided.
Benefits include full medical, dental and vision insurance, retirement and vacation.
