Good evening, today is Tuesday, April 4th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The City of Alpine will have a workshop for those seeking 2023-24 Hotel Occupancy Tax Grants at 5:30 Thursday in the City Council Chambers.
Filing for HOT grants for next fiscal year is now open with a deadline of Friday, May 5.
The workshop, which also will be available on Zoom, will cover the application process, legal uses of the grant funds and some changes to how applications will be handled this year.
Applications will have to be complete to be considered. In the past, some incomplete applications were accepted in the interest of encouraging more events.
Visitor events and other projects that draw overnight visits to the City are eligible for funding consideration, the so-called “heads in beds.”
The allowed expense categories include Advertising, Promotion of the Arts, Historical Restoration and Preservation, Sporting Events and Transportation.

Easter Sunday is this weekend and Easter Egg Hunts have been scheduled at Alpine, Marathon and Fort Davis in our area.
The Kiwanis Club will host its Hunt at 10 a.m. sharp Saturday at Kokernot Park. For more information, contact Rhonda Cole 294-0956.
The event has been a major event on the Alpine Calendar for more than 30 years.
There is no fee or registration but Cole said it goes really fast so participants can’t be late or it will all be over.
The Easter Bunny will help run the hunt and prize eggs will be among the “loot.”
The Marathon Public Library will have its Hunt at 1 p.m. Saturday on the green behind the Community Center.
The Easter Egg Hunt will be followed by hotdogs served at 1:30. The event is organized by the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department and Marathon Public Library.
And the 17th Annual Jeff Davis County Easter Egg Hunt and Picnic at the Park will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Jeff Davis County Park in Fort Davis.
The only admission cost for the egg hunt is one canned food to support the Jeff Davis County Food Pantry.
Families and friends can bring their picnic lunch and enjoy ice cream provided by Hebert’s Caboose, hot dogs provided for kids by Porter’s and music by D.J. Curtis.
The Annual Sunrise Service will be at 6:45 a.m. Sunday at the Fort Davis National Historic site.
The event is sponsored by the Jeff Davis County Ministerial Alliance and Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce. For information call 426-3015.
The Alpine Public Library is offering another program aimed at better understanding of the need to keep skies in our area dark.
“Seeing in the Dark, Watching Invisible Bird Migrations,” is the name of the program scheduled for Earth Day, April 22.
Maureen G. Frank, the new endowed professor of Conservative Biology at the Sul Ross Borderlands Research Institute, will present.
Much of the emphasis on dark skies is because light pollution makes it harder for scientists at McDonald Observatory do their work.
But dark skies are important to tourism, bringing in people from a wide area who can’t see the skies at night and preservation of wildlife.
Bright lights can distract migrating birds as they pass through our area.
The program will be at 7:30 p.m. April 22 and nighttime viewing at McDonald by Stephen Hummel will be at 8:30.

La Ciudad de Alpine tendrá un taller para aquellos que buscan subvenciones de impuestos de ocupación hotelera 2023-24 a las 5:30 el jueves en las Cámaras del Concejo Municipal.
La solicitud de subvenciones HOT para el próximo año fiscal ya está abierta con una fecha límite del viernes 5 de mayo.
El taller, que también estará disponible en Zoom, cubrirá el proceso de solicitud, los usos legales de los fondos de la subvención y algunos cambios en la forma en que se manejarán las solicitudes este año.
Las solicitudes deberán estar completas para ser consideradas. En el pasado, se aceptaron algunas solicitudes incompletas con el fin de fomentar más eventos.
Los eventos para visitantes y otros proyectos que atraen visitas nocturnas a la ciudad son elegibles para consideración de financiamiento, los llamados “cabezas en camas”.
Las categorías de gastos permitidos incluyen Publicidad, Promoción de las Artes, Restauración y Preservación Histórica, Eventos Deportivos y Transporte.

El domingo de Pascua es este fin de semana y se han programado búsquedas de huevos de Pascua en Alpine, Marathon y Fort Davis en nuestra área.

Gran parte del énfasis en los cielos oscuros se debe a que la contaminación lumínica dificulta el trabajo de los científicos del Observatorio McDonald.
Pero los cielos oscuros son importantes para el turismo, ya que atraen a personas de un área amplia que no pueden ver el cielo por la noche y la preservación de la vida silvestre.
Las luces brillantes pueden distraer a las aves migratorias cuando pasan por nuestra área.
El programa será a las 7:30 p.m. el 22 de abril y la visualización nocturna en el observatorio por Stephen Hummel será a las 8:30.
