Good evening, today is Monday, April 4th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Only one race is on the ballot for the May 7 election for the City of Alpine. Amit Rangra takes on Catherine Eaves to replace Andy Ramos, who was term limited and could not run.
A Meet and Greet has been scheduled for ten to noon Saturday at the Alpine Public Library for Eaves.
Light refreshments will be served.
A long-time secondary science teacher, Eaves plans to retire from teaching in May and cites service to others as her reason for running.
She posted on Facebook that she hopes to work on measures to increase tourism and increasing revenue through the city Hotel Occupancy Tax. She opposes raising property taxes.
She also plans to focus on economic growth and expansion of businesses in the city as well as historic building preservation and supporting the Dark Skies Initiative.
Eaves is a member of the Lion’s Club, the Kiwanis Club and Alpine Historic Association.
Two other positions are open but the incumbents, Councilors Chris Rodriguez and Martin Sandate are unopposed so those races were canceled.
The last day to register for Saturday’s Sully Showcase is Thursday for prospective students and their families to see what Sul Ross has to offer.
The on-campus event offers current high school students, their families and all interested future Lobos the opportunity to explore various academic offerings and campus services.
Faculty representatives from all three academic colleges will be on hand to help in answering any questions.
Professionals from the offices Financial Aid, Admissions, Campus Activities, Residential Living, Athletics and Career and Testing Services also will be on hand.

The Alpine Lions Club is hosting its second annual golf tournament at the Alpine Country Club April 23.
The three-person scramble will have an entry fee for 240 dollars per team or 80 dollars per person with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and Tee time at 10.
Food and refreshments will be provided on the course by the Alpine Lions Club with a payout based on the number of teams. Teams can register by contacting Lion Amit Rangra at 295-2088.
April 7 is International Beer Day and Chisos Brewery will offer free craft beer and cider at Thursday’s Weekly Mercantile at the Alpine Visitor Center.
The Center is open for community celebrations from 5 to 7:30 on Thursday afternoons with booths for refreshments and arts and crafts. It’s free to the public.
Guy and Lisa Fielder and son Tim, who are planning the Chisos Brewery Company on Murphy Street, will share some brews including Irish Red Ale and agave-pineapple cider for free.
Live music will be by Texas Sage.
The Fielders say they are anxious to hear feedback from those who try their brews.
Conley Rasor, who is heard regularly on KVLF, is offering “Building an Online Presence” a series dedicated to helping people navigate the digital frontier.
The classes are at no-cost and highlight Google Business, Basics of Search Engine Optimization, Social Media, Graphic Design, Website Development and more.
