The Alpine City Council in a three-hour meeting Tuesday learned that Keep Texas Beautiful has recognized Alpine as one of 10 winners of a state award.
The 2024 Governor’s Community Achievement Awards honored Keep Alpine Beautiful for giving the city an outstanding clean and beautiful community.
Keep Alpine Beautiful will receive 130 thousand dollars for a landscaping project to be completed in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation.
City Manager Megan Antrim praised Environmental Services Director Adelina Beall for her work in getting the award.
In other action, council approved hiring of Robert Ruckes (ROO-kas) as the new Building Official to replace Andrew Devaney who has resigned.
Noting many employees in technical jobs have left Alpine for better-paying jobs in bigger cities, Ruckes told council he intends to stay on his new job for a long time.
He said he grew up here and has family here so he is in no hurry to leave Alpine.
City Manager Megan Antrim said the building official’s office now has only two other employees but there are plans to add inspectors and grow it into a full department.
In other action at the Council meeting, discussions about proposed changes to the city charter to be submitted to the voters in November took up nearly an hour just in itself.
The charter has not been updated since 2005.
And another long discussion was about short-term rentals, also known as B-and-Bs, including six permit applications.
And council approved payment of 25 thousand dollars to the school district for its child-care program and fees for the city swimming pool this year.
Daily rates were raised one dollar each but all other fees will be the same as last year.
The Alpine Public Library will present an Alpine Dark Skies Celebration at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Kokernot Park and a program Saturday afternoon at the Visitor Center.
For the park, the program begins both nights at 9 at the soccer field. Guests should bring their own chairs.
The Saturday show at the Visitor Center will have live music, kids’ story time, information on night-sky-friendly-lighting and solar eclipse glasses for the eclipse to come on Monday.
The area of totality with a full eclipse will be pretty much along Interstate 35 in Central Texas but here we will see as much as 91 percent of the sun covered by the moon. Then music under the stars will begin at 8:30.
The Alpine Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a Paint Party for the Parks event Saturday, April 20, at Medina Park at Avenue F and South 11 th Street.
The event from 9 to 1 that day will need volunteers to help.
The playground and equipment at Medina and nearby Baines Park is ready for a fresh coat of paint and paint and brushes will be provided. For more information, call City Hall at 837-3301.
The City of Alpine has notified Fort Davis gas utility customers that effective May 1, the drop box at Lowe’s Market in Fort Davis will be removed.
Residents there may make payments at the drop box outside of Alpine City Hall on Holland Avenue, in person at City Hall or online.

The Big Bend Arts Council has released new events coming up in the next few weeks, including a show all the month of April at Earth and Fire Gallery on Ghost Town Road in Terlingua.
A reception will be from 5 to 8 Friday. Artist Richard D. Curtin will present his new work and his many visions of this iconic Big Bend Vista.
