Good evening, today is Monday, April 3rd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Marathon Public Library has received a $1,000,000 donation for its Heart of Marathon campaign.
It will help a fundraising initiative for more than two million to enlarge the Marathon Public Library and revitalize the Marathon History Museum.
Library Director Dara Cavness thanked the Dallas-based Prentice Farrar Brown and Alline Ford Brown Foundation for its extraordinary commitment.
She said it has been fun to boast that it is the smallest accredited library in Texas but it’s even more exciting to think about what will be possible once the new library is built.
At only 723 square feet, the present library has no more room for one more book, computer or even a visitor in the building.
The library attracted more than 13,000 patron visits last year, a 40% increase since 2019, and more than seven thousand computer users, a 29% increase.
The new library, designed by award-winning Dallas-based architect Dan Shipley, will include many new amenities.
They include an adult reading room, three areas for infants, children and teens and expanded stacks for the collections.
It also will increase the numbers of computer workstations, a multi-purpose community room and covered porches for outdoor seating and an outdoor garden.
The campaign also will help transform the History Museum which is housed in an adjacent 1888 adobe structure, the oldest school building in Brewster County.
The Alpine City Council will be presented with a resolution offered by the Night Sky Team on the importance of keeping city skies dark.
Mayor Catherine Eaves will present the resolution as part of her report at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
It notes International Dark Sky Week during the week of the new moon and this year it will be observed from April 15 to 22.
The Night Sky Team has been working with the city to get compliance with a new Dark Skies ordinance, a rule similar to that adopted by all area jurisdictions.
Because of all of the new ordinances, we are now part of the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the world.
It extends from north of Balmorhea on the north to the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Coahuila south of Big Bend National Park.
In her report, City Manager Megan Antrim will talk about a grant she is seeking to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment system.
And there will be a public hearing and possible action on parking restrictions around Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church to accommodate mobility-limited seniors and other needs.
These items all were part of the agenda for the March 21 meeting, which was canceled at the last moment when Ward Five Councilor Jerry Johnson died suddenly.
Tuesday’s meeting will be at 5:30 in the City Council Chambers at 803 West Holland Avenue. Like all regular council meetings, the public is welcome to attend.
The Granada Theatre is planning a Murder Mystery Dinner event on May 12 and is seeking businesses to help drive ticket sales.
Business heads could buy tickets for their staff as an employee appreciation and team-building activity.
New Event Coordinator Payton Boeh said Big Bend Regional Hospital staff has expressed an interest in participating and she hopes to get a few more businesses involved.
Jaeden Portillo is the new Miss Latina 2023, a title she won last month in Odessa.
She is the daughter of Richard Portillo, Jr., owner of J.R.P. Electric, and Angie Portillo, owner of Beauty Bar.
Her grandparents are Ruth Portillo and the late Richard Portillo and Chuy Vega and the late Mary Vega.

La Biblioteca Pública de Marathon ha recibido una donación de un millón de dólares para su campaña Heart of Marathon, o Corazón de Marathon.
