Scott C. Emerick, who spent years working at Big Bend Regional Medical Center, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2025, at his home in Alpine.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Irene, and his two sons.
Scott’s passion from the beginning of this career as a surgeon was to provide high quality surgical care for rural communities around the U.S. He worked with all of his focus, energy, experience and knowledge on each and every patient under his care during his 37 years as a surgeon.
Scott has been in the care of Alpine Memorial Funeral Home and gifts and condolences may be left by visiting alpinememorialfuneralhome.com.
Johny Weyerts of Alpine has also passed. Weyerts died on March 28.
After a stint on the rodeo circuit when he was younger, Johny returned to Texas to attend Sul Ross. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Charlsie. Johny’s love for art, music, language, wildlife, and teaching was well-known to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He is survived by his wife, Charlsie; his daughters and sons-in-law, his brother and sister; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 P.M. tomorrow at First Presbyterian Church of Alpine, Texas.
Also tomorrow, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine is hosting a training for business owners looking to understand how to find an ideal commercial space for their business.
Whether you’re launching a startup, expanding a franchise, or leading site selection, you’ll master the art of navigating the commercial real estate landscape in this Zoom webinar.
The training is Thursday morning from 10 to 11.

Next week, the group Alpine Community Projects will host a housing symposium.
ACP, along with the city of Alpine, want to hear from residents with thoughts on housing – including those who want to build but find the current ordinances or processes cumbersome.
The symposium will be at Alpine Civic Center at 6:00 on Saturday, April 12.
The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its Spring Adopt-a-Highway cleanup later this month on Thursday, April 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00.
CDRI will provide volunteers with breakfast snacks, trash bags, vests, and long-handled trash grabbers. Volunteers need to wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, gloves, hat, and sunscreen.

The 34th annual Alpine Gem and Mineral Show is later this month, from April 18 to the 20th. Entry to the event is free – and there will be over 40 indoor and outdoor vendors.
The show takes place at the Alpine Civic Center Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, from 9am to 6pm and again on Sunday, April 20, from 10 am to 4pm.
In celebration of International Dark Sky Week, join McDonald Observatory and community partners for events showcasing West Texas’s famous dark skies.
Events will be held April 22-26 at McDonald Observatory and locations throughout Fort Davis, Alpine, Marfa, and Terlingua.
At McDonald Observatory, there will be special talks, tours and Star Parties. In addition, the observatory will be offering free general admission during that week, Tuesday through Saturday.

Johny Weyerts de Alpine también falleció. Weyerts murió el 28 de marzo.
Tras una temporada en el circuito de rodeo en su juventud, Johny regresó a Texas para asistir a Sul Ross. Fue allí donde conoció y se casó con el amor de su vida, Charlsie. El amor de Johny por el arte, la música, los idiomas, la vida silvestre y la enseñanza era bien conocido por todos los que tuvieron el placer de conocerlo.

La próxima semana, el grupo Alpine Community Projects organizará un simposio sobre vivienda.

La trigesimocuarta 34.ª edición anual de la Feria de Gemas y Minerales de Alpine se celebrará a finales de este mes, del 18 al 20 de abril. La entrada al evento es gratuita y habrá más de 40 vendedores, tanto en interiores como en exteriores.
La feria se celebrará en el Centro Cívico de Alpine el viernes 18 y el sábado 19 de abril, de 9:00 a 6:00, y nuevamente el domingo 20 de abril, de 10:00 a 4:00.
Para celebrar la Semana Internacional del Cielo Oscuro, únase al Observatorio McDonald y a sus colaboradores comunitarios en eventos que muestran los famosos cielos oscuros del oeste de Texas.
Los eventos se llevarán a cabo del 22 al 26 de abril en el Observatorio McDonald y en ubicaciones de Fort Davis, Alpine, Marfa y Terlingua.
