Good evening, today is Thursday, April 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Texas Fire Marshall’s office has been tasked with investigating the huge house fire on East Holland Avenue near several East Alpine motels Thursday night.
Emergency equipment responded to the fire at the Valdez home near Hillside Baptist Church and found the home totally involved.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson said the home burned to the ground, 15 cars were caught in the fire and one dog died. But no human injuries were reported.
Alpine Police blocked sections of Holland Avenue for several hours while firemen worked the fire.
A Fire Department post said the first call came at 7:32 p.m. and firefighters encountered extreme heat and a fully engulfed structure with ammunition and vehicle explosions.
Marathon Fire Department responded with mutual aid and firefighters worked throughout the evening to get a handle on the fire.
The Marshall’s office has just begun its investigation and had no information about a cause or damage estimate, though it appears to have been a total loss.
The Alpine School District unofficially has a new superintendent to replace Becky McCutcheon, who has accepted a similar position at the Levelland School District.
The School Board Thursday night named Dr. Michelle Rinehart as the Lone Finalist for the position. She is assistant superintendent at the Rankin School District.
The state requires a 21-day waiting period before the lone finalist can be officially named. The School Board will take that up at a special meeting May 20.
Rinehart recently was awarded the National Leadership Award at the T-3 Learns Summit in Dallas.
This award recognizes educators who exemplify the ideals of the Teachers Teaching with a technology program.
More information about her will be released after the May 20 meeting, assuming she gets the contract.
Big Bend National Park announced that effective immediately all fires except portable camp stoves or grills are prohibited in the Chisos Basin due to high fire danger.
This includes wood or charcoal fires in any grills located in the Chisos Basin Campground, park residences and elsewhere in the Basin.
In a Facebook post Thursday, the park reminded visitors that all wood and ground fires are already prohibited everywhere in the park.
With low precipitation and a drought, vegetation has become extremely dry and highly susceptible to even the smallest spark.
The closure will remain in effect until fire danger abates significantly and the park rescinds the closure officially.
Brewster County Republican Chair Monica McBride reports the four candidates for Brewster County judge will be at a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Republicans Ryan Skelton and Greg Henington and Democrats Mimi Smith and Oscar Cobos will be in their respective runoff elections May 24.
They will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Alpine School District auditorium in the Administration Building at 704 West Sul Ross Avenue.
And a Meet and Greet for Alpine Mayoral Candidate Amit Rangra scheduled for Saturday at Kishmish Plaza has been postponed.
The family Hot Dog Meet and Greet now will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 6.
Rangra faces Catherine Eaves in the only city election May 7. The winner will replace Andy Ramos, who was term limited and could not run for re-election.
Early voting for the city election is in the city council chambers, the Alpine School board race is in the Civic Center and state constitutional amendments at the Beard Office Building.

La oficina del Jefe de Bomberos de Texas tiene la tarea de investigar el gran incendio de una casa en East Holland Avenue cerca de varios moteles en el East de Alpine el ayer por la noche.
El equipo de emergencia respondió al incendio en la casa de Valdez cerca de la Iglesia Bautista Hillside y encontró la casa totalmente involucrada.
