Good evening, today is Thursday, April 28th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Services will be Friday for Tommy Escamilla, a lifelong resident of Monahans and former student athletic trainer at Sul Ross State University.
He died Sunday a few days short of his 61st birthday after a lengthy illness.
Visitation will be from 9 to 6 Friday at Harkey Funeral Home with Rosary at 7 at St. John Evangelistic Catholic Church, both in Monahans.
Funeral mass will be after church services at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Tommy was a student athletic trainer at Monahans High School before going to Sul Ross and he returned to Monahans to do the same work after graduation.
Big Bend Regional Medical Center has added nine nurses and clinical team members and reopened its medical and surgical patient unit.
This follows some news stories about problems at the Alpine hospital.
C.E.O. Rick Flores told the Alpine Avalanche this week that the new unit has been located near emergency services to allow full medical and surgical service staffing.
Flores said the temporary issues largely have been due to the national nursing shortage that has affected hospitals across the country.
To compete, Big Bend Regional offered thousands of dollars in sign-on bonuses and other expanded benefits to recruit team members.
Existing staff also received bonuses and other benefits.
The Brewster County Tourism Council and Visit Big Bend will celebrate its 25th anniversary during National Travel and Tourism Week the first week of May.
Visit Big Bend Director Robert Alvarez said that the growth these 25 years shows no sign of slowing down.
Alvarez: “This is the 25th anniversary of Visit Big Bend and it’s kind of amazing when you think back that far in the 90’s that the folks who organized this thing – and there’s too many to mention – They had the foresight to see there’s not a lot of industry out here so we could do something with this tourism.”
National Tourism Week is celebrated May 1 through May 7 and brings tourism professionals together to celebrate the importance of travel, economy, local business and personal well-being.
Alvarez: “Everybody wins and benefits from tourism when folks come out here because they don’t just stay in the park. Everybody knows that. They come up here, have dinner through Reata or something like that, go to Marfa to check out the arts, go to Fort Davis and look at the national historic site. Everybody wins with tourism out in this area.”
The Council plans fun filled events as well as complimentary hospitality training provided by the Texas Mountain Trail in association with Texas A&M AgriLife.
Sheriff Ronny Dodson’s Facebook page continues to report on events stemming from the increase in migrants at the Texas-Mexico border.
In a post Thursday Alonso Delacruz was seen driving erratically near the intersection of the “Y” east of Alpine.
A chase with speeds of more than 100 miles per hour ended with spikes about ten miles south of Interstate 10.
Delacruz, front-seat passenger Adrian Escobedo and seven illegal migrants from Mexico all fled on foot but several other officers had joined the chase and they quickly were arrested.
Delacruz and Escobedo were charged with evading arrest and seven counts each of smuggling of persons.
The migrants were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
