April 27th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Wednesday, April 27th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory northwest of Fort Davis has played a key role in investigating odd behaviors of an exploding star.

An international group of astronomers led by Benjamin Thomas of The University of Texas at Austin used the telescope often referred to as H.E.T. in their work.

They were trying to unlock a puzzling mystery about a stellar explosion discovered eight years ago and evolving even now.

When they first discovered S.N. 2014-C, astronomers detected key behaviors common to such events but they did not follow the usual pattern.

They saw the light from the supernova get brighter, eventually peak and then start to dim, as expected. This made it a type of supernova astronomers call a “Type One-B.

But these supernovae are characterized by not showing any hydrogen in their ejected material, at least at first, and this one did show the presence of hydrogen.

After studying it for seven years with H.E.T., they determined those data turned out to be the key that unlocked the mystery of supernova SN 2014C.

For more information, contact Dr. Thomas at bpthomas@utexas.edu.

Brewster County Deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a total of 11 illegal migrants on private property south of Marathon Monday night.

All 11 were from Guatemala. They were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.

Next Saturday is the Red Bull Rio Grande Gravel race at Cibolo Creek Ranch on U.S. Highway 67 30 miles south of Marfa.

The race will start at 9 a.m. Saturday with a podium ceremony at 3 p.m. and an afterparty and race celebration at 4.

The course features a series of 25-mile-long loops, allowing both novice and experienced cyclists the opportunity to choose from a 25-, 50- or 75-mile course.

Those who complete the 75-mile course are eligible to receive a share of ten thousand dollars in cash prizes, which will be split equally among all podium finishers.

After the race, attendees are invited to join in post-race festivities with live music, food, drinks and more.

Sunday will include a Wings for Life World Run for free in support of Wings for Life, a charity foundation seeking a cure for spinal cord injuries.

Speaking of cycle races, online registrations are open for the 45th Annual Fort Davis Cyclefest Tour by the Permian Basin Bicycle Association September 17 and 18 in Fort Davis.

The tour provides three distance routes of 27, 55 and 76 miles starting at 8 a.m. on September 17 at the Prude Ranch near Fort Davis.

September 18 will include Mount Locke Hill Climb to the McDonald Observatory with a six-mile climb starting at 9 a.m. and a one-and-a-half-mile climb starting at 9:30.

Cyclists can enter the Saturday race for a 55-dollar fee while the Sunday Mount Locke Climb costs 25 dollars. The deadline to register is midnight September 11.

Volunteers can also register for opportunities to participate all weekend by helping drive, register, run aid stations or serve lunch at the finish line.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
