News reports lately have referred to a need for mental health services in the area and this week, the Big Bend Sentinel has a front-page story about a telephone “lifeline.”
It writes few Americans are aware of a relatively new service like 911 for emergency services but is designated for mental health, suicide and crisis intervention.
The 9-8-8 Lifeline system came online in 2021 and was available nationwide by the next year but it had not been widely promoted in the Big Bend.
Part of the reason is that the tri-county area has long had a hotline administered by PermiaCare that provides mental healthcare services locally.
But that carries a ten-digit phone number that most will not carry around in their heads. The 988 number is much easier to remember.
Permiacare director of mental health services and chief operating officer Todd Luzadder (loo-ZAY-der) said simple numbers like 911 and 988 cover a wide area in many cases.
They can be understaffed and more difficult to deal with.
In addition to the regular number, 844/420-3964, he said patients could chat online at 988Lifeline.org.
The Boquillas Port of Entry at Big Bend National Park has announced its new summer hours beginning Sunday.
The crossing provides access to the town of Boquillas, Coahuila, as well as the Mexican Protected Areas of Maderas del Carmen and Ocampo.
Then, beginning Friday next week, the crossing will be open four days a week, Fridays through Mondays.
Pedestrians will be able to access the port between 9 and 4 on open days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is closed Tuesday through Thursday.
During the transition week, the crossing will be open Sunday but closed Monday through Thursday.
the State of Coahuila does not observe Daylight Saving Time so Boquillas will display one hour earlier than the U.S. Port of Entry across the Rio.

Judge Baldemar Garza of the 229th District Court, a 1983 graduate of Sul Ross State University, will deliver the keynote address for spring commencement exercises in Alpine next month.
The Alpine ceremony will be at 5:30 May 10 at the Pete P. Gallego Center and the Eagle Pass ceremony will be the next day.
He graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1979 and from Sul Ross in Alpine in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a minor in Spanish.
Following his undergraduate studies, he received his Juris Doctorate from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1986.
Marathon’s Craig Carter and his Spur of the Moment Band will perform May 10 at B.B.Q. and Boots at the Ole Crystal Bar benefitting the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend.
Dinner will be served from 6 to 10 and dancing will be from 8 to Midnight and there will be a silent auction and more.

Últimamente los informes de noticias se han referido a la necesidad de servicios de salud mental en el área y esta semana, el Big Bend Sentinel tiene un artículo en primera plana sobre un “salvavidas” telefónico.
Escribe que pocos estadounidenses conocen un servicio relativamente nuevo como el 911 para servicios de emergencia, pero que está designado para intervención en crisis, suicidio y salud mental.
El sistema 9-8-8 Lifeline entró en funcionamiento en el 2021 y estuvo disponible en todo el país el año siguiente, pero no se había promocionado ampliamente en Big Bend.
Parte de la razón es que el área de los tres condados ha tenido durante mucho tiempo una línea directa administrada por PermiaCare que brinda servicios de salud mental a nivel local.
