April 26th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Tuesday, April 26th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

Alpine and North Brewster County are well on the way to having a brand-new ambulance service, at least for this area.

Brewster County Commissioners unanimously approved a new contract this morning with Emergent Air of El Paso to provide the service.

The Alpine City Council is scheduled to take it up in a special called meeting in just a few minutes, at 6 o’clock in the Civic Center.

Greg Henington and his Terlingua E.M.S. have been providing that service under a four-month contract since West Texas Ambulance owner and President Mike Scudder died in December,

The new contract had been written as a two-year agreement but County Judge Eleazar Cano said the company had asked for a five-year contract.

The agreed contract is or two years with three one-year extensions.

Emergent President Lee King told us the basic service will be with ground-based ambulances but plans also are to have a twin-engine Beech King Air stationed in Alpine

They are working with Big Bend Regional Medical Center for a ground-based ambulance for non-emergency transfers to hospitals in larger cities when needed.

The contract is effective May 1.

One of the largest shipments of undocumented migrants was stopped last week at the Interstate 10 checkpoint near Sierra Blanca.

U.S. Border Patrol agents referred a tractor trailer to the inspection line Saturday after a police dog alerted to them in the trailer and they found 48 migrants.

As agents removed the suspects from the trailer, they reported most were sweating profusely and looked to be overheated.

All were transported to the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol Station for medical screening and processing and the criminal investigation was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.

They ask that those who see something suspicious report it by contacting the 24/7 hotline at (866) 581-7549.

Virtual meetings to discuss legislation to use emerging technology to alleviate traffic congestion at ports of entry between Texas and four Mexican states are this week.

Senate Bill 1308, authored by Senator Cesar Blanco of El Paso, directs a joint study on the issue by TxDOT, Texas D.P.S., the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and federal agencies.

It would be on potential benefits of using Automated Driving Systems, Connected Driving Systems and other emerging technologies to ease congestion.

The international crossing between Presidio and Ojinaga has had significant congestion problems lately connected with widening the highway bridge and other issues.

The initial draft report will be ready in June and the final report will be submitted no later than January first next year.

The first virtual meeting was Tuesday. It will be repeated from 9 to 10:30 Thursday morning. For log-in call area contact Vicky Carrasco at 741-9487.

After a presentation on what a new or replaced Chisos Mountain Lodge might look like, Big Bend National Park is now seeking comments on the project.

The presentation was to notify the public of proposed changes to Lodge facilities under the National Historic Preservation Act.

It showed that the lodge has exceeded capacity and has had maintenance issues since it was built in the 1960s.

Now the Park Service invites written comments on the Chisos Lodge replacement proposal.

Comments can be submitted to chisoslodge_comments@nps.gov. They must be received no later than May 21.

I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez and this has been your local and area news report for KVLF 98.7 FM, 1240 AM and KALP 92.7 FM brought to you by your Big Bend Regional Medical Center. Have a great evening everybody.
