A group of speakers appeared at the Alpine School Board meeting last week to protest a proposed ten-thousand-dollar fee to rent Kokernot Field to the Alpine Cowboys this year.
In a letter in the Alpine Avalanche, Cowboys General Manager Kirsten Cavness wrote that the club did not have that much money in the budget for the 32 games this season.
She wrote that her great-grandfather sold the field to the district for a dollar.
The city then leases it to Sul Ross State University and it subleases it to the Cowboys for three- and-a-half months each year.
Cavness wrote that they always paid a small fee but the team also provided improvements and maintenance to the field.
The semi-professional baseball team did pay ten thousand dollars last year but that included restoration of the warning track and infield.
She warned if it had to pay the ten thousand again this year, it would not be able to afford free games to Sul Ross and school district students and staff.
And the Cowboys have had to raise sponsorship, gate fees and season-ticket prices.
She asked the school board to reduce this year’s fee to five thousand. The university announced later it would accept a compromise payment of 75 hundred dollars.
Kokernot Field and the Cowboys are considered leading tourist attractions, bringing in more “heads in beds” for area hotels and other lodging. It qualifies for regular funding from the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax.
In other action, the Avalanche reports that the school board accepted the resignation of Band Director A.K. Holmes. She has accepted a position as an assistant band director at Andrews to gain experience in a larger school district.
The popular Big Bend Open Road Race between Fort Stockton and Sanderson is now under way with registration and qualification on Highway 90 West having been Wednesday.
The Big Event, the race itself, will be all day Saturday and Highway 285 will be closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Fort Stockton scheduled a meet and greet for Thursday at the Centennial Bar and Lounge and a car show at Zero Stone Park on Friday morning.
Later on Friday, Fort Stockton will host a parade from Dickinson and Nelson Streets to Rooney Park from 4 to 6.
Contestants, most of them driving their own cars, will leave Fort Stockton Saturday morning, leaving one at a time, for the first leg to Sanderson, rally style.
Many of the fastest cars will travel the 59 miles down in less than 24 minutes. They will negotiate some 59 turns, some blind, with constant changes in elevation.
In Sanderson, cars will park around the Courthouse over the noon hour and then return on the same course back to Fort Stockton in the afternoon.
The Awards Banquet will be after the race at 7:30 Saturday evening at the Pecos County Civic Center.
Race proceeds benefit projects such as Project Graduation, food pantries, Volunteer Fire Departments, E.M.S., Future Farmers of America and the American Cancer Society.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Texas Commission on Water Quality have required all cities to inventory the water lines within their systems.
