Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the first bill of the legislative session, creating a state agency similar to the federal department of government efficiency, or DOGE.
According to the Texas Tribune, Senate Bill 14 establishes the “Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office” at a cost of $22.8 million dollars over the next five years. The bill passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support. The office will be responsible for helping other state agencies identify QUOTE “unnecessary and ineffective rules.” The office will also advise state agencies on ways to make regulations more effective and reduce department costs, among other charges.
Some Texas Democrats questioned why the agency was necessary when the state already has the Sunset Advisory Commission. The state office already regularly assesses the existence and performance of state agencies and regulations.
Early Voting For local municipal elections continues this week, and ends Tuesday, April 29.
In Alpine, the race for a seat on the city council to represent Ward 1 has drawn a three-person candidate field. Austin Smith, Andres “Andy” Ramos and Richard Portillo are all vying for that seat on the council. And in the race for the ward 3 seat, Robert Rückes is running unopposed and is all but guaranteed the spot on the council.
You can cast your ballot early for the Alpine races any time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the city council chambers, located at 803. W Holland Avenue.
Election Day is May 3.
Tomorrow, the Alpine Public Library will host its next “Travel Talk.” This month’s conversation features Bobby Gleeson who will talk about travel photography. The talk takes place Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the library.

At 1:00 p.m. on Friday, the district is sending off the UIL Academic Team and the Lady Bucks Softball team. The Academic team is heading to regionals in Abilene, and the softball team is rolling out to Monahans for playoffs.
Give the students a roaring send-off and show them your buck pride.
On Saturday, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa hosts an art exhibit featuring archived drawings and photographs of Donald Judd.
The event, Art in Context, brings the art, photos and documents showing the development of Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum and the repurposing of the Fort D.A. Russell artillery sheds.
The exhibit will be open Saturday, April 26 from 1 p.m. to 5 at the Locker Plant in Marfa, located at 199 E. Oak Street.
The event is free and open to the public.
Later this summer, the San Angelo Art Club presents the 38th annual “Fiesta in Realism.”
The all-painting show, competition and sale takes place from June 8 to the 29. SAAC members and nonmembers are encouraged to enter the show. There will be cash awards for the top work in each of the three categories – works in acrylic, oil paintings and watercolor paintings.
“Fiesta in Realism” will take place at the Kendall Art Gallery, located at 119 W. 1st Street in downtown San Angelo.

El gobernador de Texas, Greg Abbott, firmó el primer proyecto de ley de la sesión legislativa, creando una agencia estatal similar al departamento federal de eficiencia gubernamental, o DOGE.
Según el Texas Tribune, el Proyecto de Ley Senatorial 14 establece la “Oficina de Eficiencia Regulatoria de Texas” a un costo de $22.8 millones de dólares durante los próximos cinco años. El proyecto de ley fue aprobado tanto en la Cámara como en el Senado con apoyo bipartidista. La oficina será responsable de ayudar a otras agencias estatales a identificar “Normas innecesarias e ineficaces”. La oficina también asesorará a las agencias estatales sobre formas de hacer que las regulaciones sean más efectivas y reducir los costos del departamento, entre otros cargos.
Algunos demócratas de Texas cuestionaron por qué la agencia era necesaria cuando el estado ya cuenta con la Comisión Asesora Sunset. La oficina estatal ya evalúa periódicamente la existencia y el desempeño de las agencias y regulaciones estatales.
La votación anticipada para las elecciones municipales locales continúa esta semana y finaliza el martes 29 de abril.
En Alpine, la carrera por un puesto en el concejo municipal para representar al Distrito 1 ha atraído a tres candidatos. El evento es gratuito y abierto al público.
A finales de este verano, el San Angelo Art Club presenta la trigesimooctava 38ª “Fiesta en Realismo” anual.
La exposición, competencia y venta de pintura se llevará a cabo del 8 al 29 de junio. Se anima a los miembros y no miembros de SAAC a participar en la exposición. Habrá premios en efectivo para los mejores trabajos en cada una de las tres categorías: obras en acrílico, pinturas al óleo y acuarelas.
