Good evening, today is Friday, April 22nd, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Early voting for the May 7 City, School Board and two proposed Texas constitutional amendments starts Monday in three separate polling locations.
Voters for mayor in the city election will chose between Catherine Eaves and Amit Rangra for the seat vacated by Andy Ramos, who was term limited and could not run.
That election will be in the City Council Chambers while the school board race will be in the Civic Center next door.
There, the only race will be in Place Seven between incumbent Mary McCallister and challenger Elpidia Lujan.
Then, to vote in the county elections, voters will have to move five blocks east to the Val Clark Beard Office Complex west of the courthouse.
On the ballot are two proposed State Constitutional amendments, both aimed at reducing school taxes in the county.
One would provide a discount for elderly and disabled voters and the other would reduce the tax by raising exemptions.
Only voters in the city limits of Alpine may vote in the city election and only those in District Seven may vote in the school board election.
All registered voters in the county may vote in the amendment election. Early voting runs through May 3.
A wildfire on the remote South Rim of the Chisos Mountains that started Wednesday morning was officially declared contained at 30 acres the next afternoon.
Aided by cool morning temperatures and higher humidity, a crew of ten Los Diablos firefighters from Boquillas and park rangers were able to direct an attack before the heat of the day.
Its spread was restricted by the cliffs of the south rim to the south and west and the fire scar from the fire to the east last year.
This weekend marks the beginning of “Lights Out Texas,” a lighting initiative to help birds during their peak migration period.
“Lights Out Texas” runs from now until May 12 and encourages Texans to turn off all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night.
It also encourages the use of dark-skies-friendly lighting practices like aiming lights down and using lighting shields to direct light downwards.
Nearly two billion birds in the United States will pass through Texas during this season.
Most migratory birds fly at night and bright lights of commercial and residential buildings attract and disorient them, causing collisions and leaving birds vulnerable.
The Terlingua Community Garden will celebrate its Quinceañera, 15 years of growing in the Ghost Town Saturday with live music, food and activities.
Gardener Shannon Carter told the Big Bend Sentinel that people move to South County because they want to be more independent and the basis for that is learning how to grow food.
The garden is on a plot near the Ghost Town Cemetery on land donated by Bill Ivey. It uses catchment water from Ivey’s Starlight Theater so the infrequent rains can grow crops.
The party starts around 10 Saturday morning with kid-friendly arts and crafts tables and a plant sale.
Bob Evans of the School of Constructive Arts will talk about compressed-earth brick blocks at 11:30. Jeff and Binky Sartain will lead a demonstration on building with papercrete at 2:30.
Local musicians will perform throughout the day and refreshments will be provided by the Brick Vault in Marathon, Kosmic Kowgirl and Milky Way Treats.
