Janie Marie Roberts of Marathon has passed away. She was 79.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Janie lived a life deeply rooted in faith, service, and love.
Janie was born in Leesville, Louisiana, and from a young age, dreamed of being a cowgirl. And in 1969, she met a cowboy, Jack Lee Roberts, who would become the love of her life. They were married on June 5, 1971, and built a life together centered on family, faith, and unwavering devotion.
Janie had a deep love for music and found great joy in playing the piano for her church and for her grandchildren. She was a talented quilter and crocheter, lovingly creating prayer shawls and blankets that brought comfort to those facing hardships. Janie also had a gift for hospitality and cooking—no one ever left her home hungry. Her love for her family was evident in all she did. As a devoted stay-at-home wife and mother, she poured her life into caring for and nurturing those she loved most.
Janie is survived by her beloved husband, Lee; her three children, nine grandchildren. She is also survived by her two siblings along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Janie will be held on Saturday, April 25, at 11:00 a.m. at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine, Texas.

At last night’s city council meeting, officials discussed collaboration and cost with Alpine ISD over the use and improvement of Manuel Payne Park.
The district’s superintendent Michelle Rinehart told officials that the budget for the project is near $1.3 million dollars.
RINEHART1: “I think there’s some ways we can come in under that budget, but we want to be frank and honest about what this could look like on that high end. // We would be looking to split that funding 50-50 between the district and the city.” (0:13)
According to Rinehart, some of the improvements include installing artificial turf, adding a new backstop and scoreboard and adding a set of bleachers and a press box.
And as part of the potential 10-year agreement between the city and district, Alpine ISD would coordinate all events that make use of the field.
The city is discussing how to move forward and fund the effort and is set to consider an agreement with the district at an upcoming meeting.

This weekend, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa will host their annual Community Day.
The event will feature open viewings of works, open hours at the Judd Foundation’s Ranch Office, an exhibition of artwork by students in Marfa and Presidio, free dinner and workshops, folklorico and mariachi performances and more.
Community Day is Sunday, April 26.
Open Hours at the Judd Foundation’s Ranch Office will be Sunday morning from 10 to noon. The open viewing of works is from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. And the celebration continues with music and dance at the Arena, located at 1 Cavalry Row in Marfa.

Later this month, the city of Alpine and the Texas Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to hear about transportation needs and concerns within the city.
TxDOT is looking for public input on a mobility plan it’s putting together for the city. The department is looking to hear what you consider to be Alpine’s primary corridors, what the key transportation concerns, what safety issues you have, pedestrian and bicycle needs, and rail crossings.
The meeting will be Thursday, April 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the city council chambers.

Sul Ross State University will host a donor registration drive next week. The event gives people the chance to join the national registry of potential bone marrow and stem cell donors to help fight blood cancer.
To be eligible for the registry, you must be between 18 and 55 years old, and be in general good health. Additional screening information will be available on-site for participants who wish
to learn more about the registration process.
The event is sponsored by the Sul Ross Student Athletic Advisory Committee and Earl Young’s Team and the Office of Civic Engagement and Student Assistance.
The event is open to the public and will be held Tuesday, April 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
University Center Mall.

Next month (MAY), Brewster County will hold its annual countrywide cleanup event.
Brewster County trucks will visit several locations in the county and will accept your junk and rubbish. Some of what the county will pick up include furniture and household items, mattresses and bedding, some appliances, yard waste and tires. A separate trailer for tires will be available. All tires must have the wheels and rims removed.
The first bulk pickup in Terlingua on May 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Road and Bridge Yard on FM170.
The next county pick up will be on May 9 in Marathon in Alpine from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Marathon pickup will be at the Road and Bridge Yard on North Albert St., and the pickup in Alpine will be at the landfill.

Esposa, madre, abuela y amiga devota, Janie vivió una vida profundamente arraigada en la fe, el servicio y el amor.
Janie nació en Leesville, Luisiana, y desde muy joven soñó con ser vaquera. Y en 1969, conoció a un vaquero, Jack Lee Roberts, quien se convertiría en el amor de su vida. Contrajeron matrimonio el 5 de junio de 1971 y construyeron una vida juntos centrada en la familia, la fe y una devoción inquebrantable.
A Janie le sobreviven su amado esposo, Lee; sus tres hijos y sus nueve nietos. También le sobreviven sus dos hermanos, junto con numerosos sobrinos.
Los servicios junto a la tumba para Janie se llevarán a cabo el sábado 25 de abril, a las 11:00 a. m., en el Cementerio Elm Grove en Alpine, Texas.

En la reunión del concejo municipal celebrada anoche, los funcionarios discutieron con el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD) los aspectos relativos a la colaboración y los costos para el uso y la mejora del Parque Manuel Payne.
La superintendente del distrito, Michelle Rinehart, informó a los funcionarios que el presupuesto para el proyecto ronda los 1,3 millones de dólares.

Asimismo, como parte del posible acuerdo de 10 años entre la ciudad y el distrito, Alpine ISD se encargaría de coordinar todos los eventos que hagan uso del campo deportivo.
La ciudad se encuentra analizando la mejor manera de avanzar y financiar esta iniciativa, y tiene previsto someter a consideración un acuerdo con el distrito en una próxima reunión.

Este fin de semana, la Fundación Chinati en Marfa celebrará su Día de la Comunidad anual.
El evento incluirá visitas abiertas a las obras, horario de puertas abiertas en la Oficina del Rancho de la Fundación Judd, una exposición de obras de arte realizadas por estudiantes de Marfa y Presidio, cena y talleres gratuitos, presentaciones de danza folclórica y mariachi, entre otras actividades.

A finales de este mes, la ciudad de Alpine y el Departamento de Transporte de Texas (TxDOT) celebrarán una reunión pública para escuchar las necesidades y preocupaciones relacionadas con el transporte dentro de la ciudad.
TxDOT busca recibir la opinión del público sobre un plan de movilidad que está elaborando para la ciudad. El departamento desea saber cuáles consideran ustedes que son los corredores principales de Alpine, cuáles son las preocupaciones clave en materia de transporte, qué problemas de seguridad observan, cuáles son las necesidades para peatones y ciclistas, y todo lo referente a los cruces ferroviarios.
La reunión se llevará a cabo el jueves 30 de abril, de 2:00 a 4:00 p. m., en la sala del Concejo Municipal.

La Universidad Estatal Sul Ross organizará una campaña de registro de donantes la próxima semana. El evento ofrece a las personas la oportunidad de unirse al registro nacional de posibles donantes de médula ósea y células madre para ayudar a combatir el cáncer de sangre.
Para ser elegible para el registro, debe tener entre 18 y 55 años de edad y gozar de buena salud general. Habrá información adicional sobre los criterios de selección disponible en el lugar para aquellos participantes que deseen obtener más detalles sobre el proceso de registro.
El evento está patrocinado por el Comité Asesor de Estudiantes Deportistas de Sul Ross, por el equipo “Earl Young’s Team” y por la Oficina de Participación Cívica y Asistencia Estudiantil.

El próximo mes (MAYO), el condado de Brewster llevará a cabo su evento anual de limpieza en todo el condado.
Los camiones del condado de Brewster visitarán varias ubicaciones dentro del condado y recibirán sus desechos y basura. Entre los artículos que el condado recogerá se incluyen muebles y enseres domésticos, colchones y ropa de cama, algunos electrodomésticos, residuos de jardinería y neumáticos.
