Good evening, today is Thursday, April 21st, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
With wildland fires breaking out across the state, a small fire was reported Wednesday at Big Bend National Park.
Park Headquarters received reports about 11 Wednesday morning of smoke near the southern edge of the Southwest Rim of the Chisos Mountains.
A small crew of rangers quickly began to hike into the remote area while the park pilot provided reconnaissance from the air to scout the location and extent of the fire.
Fires are breaking out across the state, particularly in the west, with high temperatures, low humidity and rain so long ago no one remembers what it’s like.
Initial reports said the fire was about a half-acre in size and backing to the southwest through sparse pinyon-juniper and grass.
By late afternoon it had grown to about an acre and a half. The fire was west of the South Rim trail near South Rim Four campsite that burned a year ago.
The cause of the fire was unknown at press time but reports were that it was not expected to grow significantly.
Another emergency services leader plans to step down from her job.
Jeff Davis County E.M.S. Director Vickie Fowler, who has been in the role for more than 13 years, will retire from the volunteer-run service in June.
In South Brewster County, Terlingua Fire and E.M.S. Chief Greg Henington has begun a search for his replacement.
In North Brewster County city and county governments are working on a contract with Emergent Air of El Paso to take over the ambulance service in the northern half of the county.
The void was left by the sudden death of Alpine EMS Director and Fire Chief Mike Scudder in December.
Henington and his Terlingua E.M.S. has been providing that service under a four-month contract.
Fowler was the only paid member of the Jeff Davis E.M.S. All others are volunteers.
The Alpine American Legion post of Alpine at will host a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the Alpine Fire Department Saturday.
Fire Personnel will meet guests and several pieces of apparatus will be present, The money raised will be used to buy equipment and gear.
Tickets are available from members of the Alpine Fire Department or by calling the fire station at 837-2366.
Tickets to the dinner are 12 dollars each. It will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Legion Hall at 306 West Sul Ross Avenue.
Students in Alpine High School art teacher’s Rachel Maxwell’s classes will compete for honors in a contest with Dark Skies as a theme and the winners will be chosen Friday.
It will be as the city’s Earth Day observance begins at 5 p.m. Friday in Kokernot Park for participants in a Dark Skies Coloring Contest suggested by City Councilor Judy Stokes.
County Sheriff Ronny Dodson will judge the teenaged artists who are competing for cash awards.
The winners’ works will be featured in a coloring book to be offered free of charge in the Alpine Visitors Center and in dining establishments around town.
They also will be shown at a fine arts exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday in the lobby of the Holland Hotel.

Con incendios forestales en todo el estado, se informó un pequeño incendio el miércoles en el Parque Nacional Big Bend.
