Good evening, today is Wednesday, April 20th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
Marisol Aguilar Skelton has been named to the position of assistant district attorney under 83rd District Attorney Ori White.
She has served under now three D.A.s, Rod Ponton, Sandy Wilson and now White. She earlier served as an office manager, legal assistant and other chores.
Skelton was sworn in this week after passing the bar examination.
She is a lifelong resident of Brewster County, a graduate of Marathon High School and the wife of long-time Chief Deputy Ryan Skelton.
He faces a runoff election next month against Greg Henington for the Republican nomination to Brewster County judge.
Area law enforcement continues to make arrests of illegal border crossers.
Brewster County deputies and Border Patrol agents took in four more south of Marathon, where a lot of arrests have been made.
The three adults and one juvenile in this bust were from Mexico. Like the others, they were referred to the Border Patrol for processing and deportation.
Construction of improvements to the Alpine Visitor Center at Avenue E and 3rd has been completed.
It includes new parking, rest rooms and a new covered pavilion.
One of its first uses will be for the Big Bend Community Band, which will play its next concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30. We reported earlier it was a “stage” but that was incorrect.
The band is rehearsing at 7 p.m. each Wednesday in the Sul Ross Band Room. New band members always are welcome.

The Alpine Historic Association, Visit Alpine and the Sul Ross Theatre Program will host Historic Alpine Ghost Tours Friday and Saturday.
The tour will start at 8:30 p.m. at the Reata Restaurant at 203 North 5th Street in Alpine with regular tickets at 20 dollars and 18 for children, students with I.D. and seniors.
Tickets will include one “Spooky Drink,” compliments of the Reata.
Children must be at least eight years old and it is recommended they wear comfortable shoes.

The City of Alpine will host its annual Earth Day Celebration from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Kokernot Municipal Park by the pavilion.
There will be food, a bouncy castle, face painting, kid’s activities, information booths and a community painting project.
There will also be live music throughout the event by the Doodlin’ Hogwallops.
Big Bend Telephone Company will host its next Networking After Work Mixer from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at their offices at 808 North 5th Street.
Anybody can enjoy an opportunity to meet, socialize and share ideas with local business leaders and members of the community.
It will include refreshments, food by Roux Alpine, opportunities to make connections and build business relationships.
The Alpine American Legion post of Alpine at will host a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for the Alpine Fire Department Saturday.
Fire Personnel will meet guests and several pieces of apparatus will be present. The money raised will be used to buy equipment and gear.
Tickets are available from members of the Alpine Fire Department or by calling the fire station at 837-2366.
Tickets to the dinner are 12 dollars each. It will be at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Legion Hall, 306 West Sul Ross Avenue.

El recorrido comenzará a las 8:30 p.m. en el Restaurante Reata en 203 North 5th Street en Alpine con entradas regulares a 20 dólares y 18 para niños, estudiantes con identificación y personas mayores.
Los boletos incluirán una “Bebida espeluznante”, cortesía del Reata.
Los niños deben tener al menos ocho años y se recomienda llevar calzado cómodo.
