The issue of healthcare in the area was featured prominently in the current issues of both the Alpine Avalanche and the Big Bend Sentinel this week.
Alpine Police Chief Darrell Losoya contributed a piece to the Avalanche’s editorial page, saying many calls to the 911 emergency line are about someone having a mental health crisis.
The police department coordinates with public mental health providers and community services to provide the intervention needed.
The Sentinel says Alpine Doctor Adrian Billings told about new mental health fellowships to address community mental health issues.
Dr. Billings is both the chief medical officer for Preventive Care Health Services and associate dean of rural and community engagement for Texas Tech Health Science Center.
He said federal grants are helping finance mental health fellowships, including one by the Big Bend Regional Hospital District. Dr. Billings has long worked to get health care workers to practice in our area and he said mental health fellowships also could be persuaded to come here.
“Guitar in the Big Bend,” a series of free classical guitar concerts and a masterclass at Sul Ross State University, will be at various area locations over the weekend of April 12 to 14.
Adjunct Professor Nicolas Hurt said the participants include the university, the Museum of the Big Bend, the City of Alpine and First Presbyterian Church in Marfa.
A welcome reception and workshop will be at 5 Friday, April 12, at Far West Texas Guitars at 114 North 6 th Street in Alpine.
The featured concert artist is Romanian guitarist Dragos Ilie (EE-lee), who has entertained audiences across Europe, Asia and the United States.
He will teach the masterclass from noon to two on Saturday the 6 th in Room 200 of the Fine Arts Building on campus and perform at 6 along with Hurt at the Museum of the Big Bend.
Dragos will perform with classical guitarist Jeremy Waldrip at the First Presbyterian Church in Marfa at 7 Sunday evening. For more information, email Hurt at nicolas.hurt@sulross.edu.
Big Bend National Park has announced plans to completely demolish and rebuild the popular Chisos Lodge, requiring it to close for two years.
Built in 1964, the main Chisos Mountains Lodge building is an important part of the park’s history and visitor infrastructure.
Over many years, instability of the soils beneath the building has led to significant damage to the foundation, walls and building systems.
And Big Bend visitation has surpassed the kitchen and dining service capabilities of the restaurant.

The Big Bend Sentinel has reported that Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez, a long-time Democrat, will support Republican Senator Ted Cruz in this year’s election.
Dominguez said he is backing Cruz because the senator is not hiding the significant problems caused by recent waves of migrants crossing the border.
Dominguez also appeared with Cruz in a video campaign ad for the newly launched “Democrats for Cruz.”
In the ad, he said he oversees 108 miles of border and border security that has gone out of control for the last two years.
