Good evening, today is Tuesday, April 18th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A secessionist standoff in the Davis Mountains 26 years ago is the subject of a new book that will be the subject of a panel discussion April 29 at the Museum of the Big Bend.
It tells of the seven-day standoff between law enforcement and members of an anti-government group at the Davis Mountains Resort in 1997.
Donna Marie Miller wrote the book, “Republic of Texas War,” and will participate in the discussion about the event at 1 p.m. Saturday next week at the museum.
The author will be joined in discussion with former Texas Rangers Jess Malone and David Duncan and Joe Rowe, who was held hostage in his home by the Republic of Texas Militia.
Militia leader Rick McLaren had moved to the area after declaring that Texas joining the United States in 1845 was illegitimate and Texas was an independent country.
The book, “Texas Secessionists Standoff,” was published in January by Texas A&M University Press.
The panel discussion is free and open to the public and Miller will be available for book signing. For more information, visit museumofthebigbend.com.
Alpine author Ben H. English is the new vice president of the Big Bend Natural History Association, a non-profit dedicated to the promotion of the Big Bend area.
He resigned from the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Association Board Monday saying his new duty does not allow him to give the time he would like to the poetry project.
He said he looks forward to working with the new History Association Executive Director Julie Childs and Secretary Greg Henington, among others.
English was raised mostly in the Big Bend area and attended a one-room schoolhouse in Terlingua.
He also is an honors graduate of Angelo State University with a B.A. in government.
English is the author of “Black and White,” “Uvalde Raider,” “Out There, Essays on the Lower Big Bend,” and many others. He said he has two more books in the works.
The McDonald Observatory, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Nature Conservancy will host a Chihuahuan Desert Nature Night at the Granada Theatre at 6 p.m. April 30.
The event will feature a joint presentation on wildlife, private property conservation and preserving the night skies.
It will include activities such as Chihuahuan Desert trivia, coloring pages, a table with skulls, tracks and furs and wildlife bingo.
As the sun sets, attendees can join a dusk-time hike up Hancock Hill to learn about the collaborative work of The Nature Conservancy, T.P.W.D., and the McDonald Observatory.
The event is free but a $10 donation is encouraged to benefit conservation efforts. For online tickets, visit granadatheatre.events/events.
Applications are now open for the West Texas Undergraduate Women in Conservation Retreat by The Nature Conservancy of Texas.
Undergraduate women students of will spend five days in the Davis Mountains participating in field activities and learning from professional women working in conservation.
Participants will learn about careers that are available and the organizations working for conservation in Texas.
Food and lodging will be provided for free with spotlight surveys, mist netting for birds and bats, plant I.D. and vegetation surveys and more.
