Next week, Early Voting starts for local municipal elections across the region.
In Alpine, the race for a seat on the city council to represent Ward 1 has drawn a three-person candidate field. Austin Smith, Andres “Andy” Ramos, and Richard Portillo are all vying for that seat on the council.
And in the race for the Ward 3 seat, Robert Rückes is running unopposed and is all but guaranteed a spot on the council.
Early Voting starts Tuesday, April 22, and will continue through April 29. You can cast your ballot early any time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the city council chambers, located at 803. W Holland Avenue.
Election Day is May 3.
According to the Big Bend Sentinel, a stretch of ranchland in Presidio County could soon become the site of a multimillion-dollar data center for artificial intelligence.
The paper reports that Open Origin, an energy generation and distribution company, is behind the effort and has been in contact with officials from the county and the city of Marfa. The company’s CEO told the Sentinel that it’s in the “early stages” of the potential data center and that their “priority is to work closely with local stakeholders to ensure the project reflects community needs and values.”
As the Sentinel reports, a data center of this kind could bring a boost to the regional economy, but it could also have major environmental impacts, particularly related to groundwater extraction.
This weekend, to celebrate the start of National Parks Week, the Blackwell School in Marfa will screen the film “Deep in the Heart,” a documentary celebrating the wonders of Texas’ wildlife and landscapes.
The viewing will be followed by a Q&A with the film producer Katy Baldock.
Watch “Deep in the Heart” on Saturday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the Blackwell School National Historic site – located at 501 S. Abbott Street in Marfa.
Next week, the Alpine Public Library will host its next “Travel Talk.” This month’s conversation features Bobby Gleeson, who will talk about travel photography. The talk takes place on April 25 at 7 p.m. at the library.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will host a plant sale later this month in Alpine.
On Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can purchase native plants, cacti, flowering plants, perennials, and shrubs. The sale takes place at Forever West Texas, located at 308 West Avenue E in Alpine.
As part of the sale, the society is encouraging attendees to also donate plants to the Patty Manning Pollinator Garden. The garden, named after Patty Manning, a champion of native plants and the Chihuahuan Desert who died last September, is currently being built at the Alpine Public Library. The future site will promote and support biodiversity and pollinator health.
Payment methods accepted at the sale include cash, checks, credit cards, and debit cards.

Later this summer, the two-day festival Smoke in the Mountains takes place in Fort Davis.
The family-friendly event is a fundraiser for Jeff Davis County first responders.
The event will be June 6 and 7 in Fort Davis at the courthouse lawn. There will be a bbq competition, a silent auction, a cornhole tournament and a street dance featuring the Memphis Band and the Pecos River Band.

Como parte de la venta, la sociedad anima a los asistentes a donar también plantas al Patty Manning Pollinator Garden.
