This morning, Blue Origin launched its New Shepard rocket with a celebrity-packed, all-female crew.
The flight was the 11th-crewed launch to the edge of space for the private company owned by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos.
The flight took off from the company’s facility north of Van Horn, carrying on board Bezo’s fiancée and reporter Lauren Sánchez, pop star Katy Perry, and journalist Gayle King among others.
The flight lasted roughly 11 minutes and took the 5-person crew some 62 miles above Earth.
BLUEORIGIN1: “328,000 feet, 100 kilometers, welcome to space ladies, or shall I say astronauts.”
Speaking after the launch, Gayle King said the experience was life-changing.
KING1: It’s oddly quiet when you get up there, it’s really quiet and peaceful. And you look down at the planet and you think, ‘That’s where we come from?’ To me, it’s such a reminder about how we need to do better, be better.
Today’s launch, according to NPR, was the first all-female spaceflight since 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova orbited the Earth during a nearly three-day solo flight.
Tomorrow, the Fort Davis Historical Society presents a conversation with Jeff Fisher who will tell the story of his family history. Hear the story of the Fisher’s decades of work running their ranch in Madera Canyon and about their lives and contributions in the Davis Mountains area.
The talk takes place Tuesday, April 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the Overland Train Museum located at 511 N. Fort St.
Tomorrow Alpine officials meet for their regular city council meeting – taking place at the council chambers at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

The Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine is holding a few training sessions this week, and the first starts Wednesday.
From 11 a.m. to noon, the SBDC will host a presentation on learning the basics of Google Ads. In this Zoom webinar, you’ll learn how to create an account and set up an ad campaign. Then, on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the SBDC will host a webinar on the key metrics that matter in marketing and how to use them. By measuring the right metrics, businesses can make data-driven decisions to improve their marketing strategies and see better results.

In Fort Davis this weekend, Doug Moreland’s Family Barn Dance is back at the Kelly Pavilion. Enjoy an evening full of dancing on Saturday, April 19 from 7 to 10 p.m.
