Good evening, today is Wednesday, April 13th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Estela C. Madrid of Marfa was Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with burial at the Merced Cemetery. She died April 5 with her family by her side,

Estela was born in Shafter on September 16, 1938, and later worked for Victims of Crime and as city secretary for the city of Marfa.

She later retired from the U.S. Border Patrol where she worked as a budget assistant. 

Estela was a member of the Blackwell School Alliance. 

Two sisters preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, a son, two sisters, a brother, four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Two of the Texas Ten Most Wanted Sex Offenders, including one from Fort Stockton, are back in custody after recent arrests.

Braulio Davila of Fort Stockton was arrested on April 3 in Boquillas del Carmen across from Big Bend National Park. A Crime Stoppers reward will be paid in his capture.

And Joaquin Salgado the Fourth of Carrizo Springs turned himself in to authorities on April 6.

The 49-year-old Davila was arrested and then brought to the Del Rio-Ciudad Acuña Port of Entry by Mexican authorities on April 4.

There, he was arrested by U.S. authorities, including Texas D.P.S. Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection and the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office.

Davila had been wanted since April last year after the U.S. Marshals issued a warrant for his arrest for failure to register as a sex offender.

In June, the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office also issued two warrants for failure to register.


Alpine will see two Easter Egg hunts this weekend with one at Kokernot park on Saturday and another on Historic Murphy Street on Easter Sunday.

The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will host its annual Easter Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kokernot Park

Sunday will be filled with Easter festivities on Historic Murphy Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting with another Easter Egg Hunt at 11.

Live music is scheduled from the Old Rugged Choir from 11:30 to 1:30 and the best bonnet will receive a free bottle of bubbly.

Throughout the event, shrimp and sausage Gumbo from Roux will be served along with a plant sale from Murphy Street Mercado and wine and appetizer specials from Petit Bijou.


The next fee-free day for Big Bend National Park will be Saturday in observance of the beginning of National Park week.

All entrance fees will be waived at all national parks for the second time this year. The remaining three days are August 4, September 24 and Friday November 11.

Free admission days are designed to encourage discovery and visitation to the country’s wide variety of national parks.

Currently, the Chisos Basin Campground and Rio Grande Village Campground are closed for major road repairs and resurfacing.

The Big Bend Community Band will play its next concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the new stage at Alpine Visitor Center.

The band is rehearsing now at 7 p.m. each Wednesday in the Sul Ross Band Room. New band members always are welcome.
