Good evening, today is Wednesday, April 12th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
The Alpine Historical Association’s Ghost Tours are back beginning at 8 Thursday, Friday and Saturday and will include a “spooky cocktail” courtesy of Reata Restaurant.
The fourth season of the award-winning tours starts at the Reata and stories include Crystal Holland, who was murdered in front of the Historic Holland Hotel in 1916.
Another was Harvey Hughes, who was hanged on the lawn of the Brewster County Courthouse in 1923, one of the last hangings in Texas.
Other ghost stories will be acted out at other venues on the tour. The Alpine Theatre Department and director Marjorie Scott will present each story on the tour, as only actors can.
And it ends with a complimentary nightcap at The Century Bar & Grill inside the Holland, one of four Far West Texas hotels designed by the legendary architect Henry C. Trost.
Admission is $20 for adults and 18 for children 12 and under, seniors and college students with valid I.D. Tickets can be purchased at alpineghosttours.com.
Money raised helps to fund theatre scholarships at Sul Ross.
Guests should wear comfortable shoes for the one-mile walk. The tours are recommended for ages 8 and up.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is coming to the tri-county area to provide information and help citizens with events throughout next week.
The bureau is a U.S. government agency designed to make sure citizens are treated fairly by banks, lenders and other financial institutions.
Sunshine House Executive Director Karie Van Zeyst said every session will be as much of an opportunity for the C.F.P.B. to learn the needs of Rural communities.
Zeyst: “Some of the issues we have also are different here, so they’re trying to learn as much as they can while they’re here about what rural communities need in the future from them, how they can reach out to help.”
Zeyst said that this is the first time the bureau will ever visit a rural community, so they hope the tri-county area can serve as a model for other rural areas.
Zeyst: “Of course, the United States is very big. Not everyone is going to have the same issues that we do. We’re very near the border, we have a lot of different issues that somebody in a different location may not have but we’re going to really show them around and try to get them as much information that we can.”
They will be here from from 10 to 6 Tuesday at the Sunshine House talking about scams and fraud that target the elderly, intermediary training and educating the public.
They will be in Marfa next Wednesday at the U.S.O. Building at 10 a.m. with an educating the public panel and a question-and-answer session.
Then they’ll be at the community center in Presidio at 3 p.m., also with an educating the public panel and a Q.&.A.
The Bureau presenters will close their visit at 11 a.m. next Thursday in Terlingua at the Community Center with the same educating the public panel and a Q.&.A.
In other action Tuesday, Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding to create a non-profit organization to oversee the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
The Alpine Ambassadors have scheduled a ribbon cutting for Out West Floral and Pedal Pushers at 205 East Holland.
Katie Ceynowa has operated Out West Floral since 2012 and bought Pedal Pushers in 2018 but had to shut down during the Covid pandemic.
With Covid now officially over, the two businesses will again be open in the shop between the Granada Theatre and Ringtail Records.
The ribbon cutting is scheduled for 5:30 Thursday, April 27.
