Funeral services were Monday at Marfa First Baptist Church for Luz Aranda Becerra of Marfa who died Wednesday with her family by her side at age 97.
She was laid to rest next to her husband at Merced Cemetery,
Luz was born in Mexico on December 31, 1924, and later married the love of her life, the late Candelario Becerra.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and two sons.

Off-duty Border Patrol agents and Mission Support specialists from Big Bend Border Patrol Sector were credited with rescuing a family from a house fire in Marfa early Saturday morning.
Two Big Bend Sector employees, who live nearby, saw the fire and rushed to render aid.
With the help of some Border Patrol agents, they rescued a mother and child and then helped Presidio County deputies rescue an adult male trapped on his balcony.
Moments later, the home along with its balcony was fully engulfed in flames.
Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Humberto Hernandez was first on the scene and, despite the dangers to himself, he jumped into action.
He was using a motto he is known for, “Not on my watch, not today.”
Big Bend Sector Chief Patrol Agent Sean McGoffin noted the rescue was an example of the dedication and bravery of Patrol’s agents and other personnel.
They often support the communities by helping those in need, no matter if they are on or off-duty, he said.
The Alpine Historic Association, the Sul Ross Theatre Program and Visit Alpine will host Historic Alpine Ghost Tours April 22 and 23.
The Sul Ross Theater Program has developed skits to tell the stories about ancient spooks and goblins.
The tour will start at 8:30 p.m. at the Reata Restaurant at 203 North 5th Street in Alpine with regular tickets at 20 dollars and 18 for children, students with I.D. and seniors.
Tickets will include one “Spooky Drink,” compliments of the Reata.
Children must be at least eight years old and it is recommended that they wear comfortable shoes and to be prepared for the unseasonal possibility of cooler weather.

Brewster County Sheriff’s Office and Alpine Police both posted on Facebook that this is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.
They write they appreciate all the long, sometimes stressful hours that dispatchers dedicate to keeping us all safe.
They are the voices that connect our community to law enforcement, fire, E.M.S., and several other services during times of need.
A poster notes they are always heard but rarely seen. They are the heroes behind the scenes and the calm voices in the dark.
Marfa Independent School District will host a Pre-Kinder and Kindergarten roundup to register students from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 20.
Registration has moved to an online system, but computers will be available at the High School office to use in the registration.
Required documents include a birth certificate, social security card, immunization record and a parent I.D.
