Good evening, today is Tuesday, April 11th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.
A celebration of life will be announced later for Sarah Whitson Bourbon of Terlingua, who died March 30 at her home in Terlingua. She was 76.
Sarah was born September 12, 1946, in Denton and graduated from Denton High School and later got a bachelor’s degree in arts at the University of North Texas.
In 1980, she became Managing Director of Texas Monthly where she discovered and fell in love with the Big Bend area.
She met and married Bill Bourbon on February 1, 1987.
Sarah was an avid bird watcher and loved cuisine of all cultures. She was preceded in death by her husband and survived by two sons and a grandson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in her name to the Terlingua school robotics building.

The 394th District Court headquartered in Alpine is becoming a pilot court for district courts across the state and was a leader in virtual courts during the Covid pandemic.
District Judge Roy Ferguson told us his court was one of three in the state to work on a solution when courts were ordered closed in the early days of the pandemic.
The courts also were ordered to continue to function, but they could not do so in person and the committee of three picked Zoom as the best software to make that happen.
Ferguson said hybrid courts with some participants there in person and others by Zoom can allow those who have to travel long distances to appear by Zoom, saving a lot of time.
The National Center for State Courts is funding $15,000 to equip the Alpine court with the necessary equipment.
The improvements, which should be operational by June, can save the county 100 thousand dollars a year at no cost to county taxpayers.
Ferguson’s assistant Lori Holguin presented the plan for virtual courts to Brewster County Commissioners Court at its regular meeting Tuesday morning.
In other action Tuesday, Commissioners approved a Memorandum of Understanding to create a non-profit organization to oversee the Alpine Volunteer Fire Department.
The city and county jointly oversee firefighting in Alpine and north Brewster County but it now will have oversight by a joint board with Paul Loeffler as its chairman.
County Judge Greg Henington said the department will handle calls in and out of the city limits but the two will no longer have to invoice each other for such actions.
The new board will have members from both the city and the county.
Sul Ross State University has rescheduled the grand opening of the new Emmett and Miriam McCoy Building at the Museum of the Big Bend on the Alpine campus for June 23 and 24.
The addition of the McCoy Building doubles the size of the museum, creating large, dynamic spaces for events and the display of history and art.
Award-winning architectural firm Page of San Antonio used the unique nature of the site to create a melding of the original 1937 museum with a new contemporary structure.
On display in the new building will be “Western Beef Cattle,” a series of rarely exhibited paintings by the late El Paso artist Tom Lea.
The museum will display works from John L. Nau the Third’s Collection of Texas Art and historic murals by Clint Baermann, Xavier Gonzalez and Julius Woeltz.
Newly acquired works from the museum’s permanent collection will also will be on display at the grand opening. For more information, visit museumofthebigbend.com.

El Tribunal de Distrito 394 con sede en Alpine se está convirtiendo en un tribunal piloto para los tribunales de distrito de todo el estado y fue líder en tribunales virtuales durante la pandemia de Covid.

La nueva junta tendrá miembros tanto de la ciudad como del condado.
La Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross ha reprogramado la gran inauguración del nuevo edificio Emmett y Miriam McCoy en el Museo de Big Bend en el campus de Alpine para el 23 y 24 de junio.
La adición del Edificio McCoy duplica el tamaño del museo, creando espacios amplios y dinámicos para eventos y la exhibición de historia y arte.
