Tomorrow Alpine ISD hosts their third annual health fair.
For the last three years the district and the students in the school’s certified nursing assistant program have held the fair as an opportunity for the public to receive health information and free resources.
Gayla Owens is the district’s nurse. She spoke to KVLF about the health fair. She said people will be able to get their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar checked, among other things.
We’ve got the pharmacies coming [Martin: That’d be Highland Drug and the Prescription Shop], and we’ve got our local crisis center – Virginia and Mrs. Olizaba coming – the health department, my CNA class will be there, have a booth, we’ve got our lions club will be there.”
Owens says Lions Club will provide eyeglasses to anyone who might not be able to afford one. And they’re also accepting eyeglasses you might no longer use.
There will be drawings and giveaways at the fair and the district will be celebrating the CNA program’s first graduating class.
Yes sir, so I teach the CNA class at the high school and I have eight seniors this year and one from Marathon as well that will be graduating.”
Next year, Owens says the program will include Marfa students as well.
Tomorrow’s fair will take place at the high school’s cafeteria. The event will be Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.
According to the Big Bend Sentinel, the stretch of Holland Avenue in Alpine that was destroyed in a fire last May has a new owner and efforts to clean the wreckage are now underway.
The building’s current owner, Billy Ivey, told the paper he had been negotiating with the city over the sale of the site – but just recently went with a QUOTE “better offer” he received to sell the property to someone else.
The paper reported that Ivey and the new owners are working together to clean up the property, which has received violations from the city. Ivey was also required to have an asbestos inspection done at the site, which he said led to cleanup delays.
The Alpine Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office said the cause of the fire was ruled “undetermined.”
This weekend, the Sul Ross Department of Visual and Performing Arts continues its performance of the musical “Next to Normal.”
The show tells the story of a suburban mother who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder brought on by a past family trauma. Her family struggles to cope with her condition and their own mental health.
Performances will be tonight, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors and children. Admission is free for veterans and SRSU faculty, staff and students with valid ID.

Sul Ross State University presents Mis Raices – a pottery exhibition by Monica Garcia. The show is currently on exhibit at the Fine Arts Building on campus.
A closing reception for the show is Friday, April 11 from 5 to 7 p.m.
This weekend, the Terlingua’s robotics team, 11720 Purobots, will host an open house and fundraiser at the High School’s robotics room from 11am-2pm.
BBQ plates will be sold for $15.
And all donations will support the team’s trip to Corpus Christi for the UIL State Competition next month.
Next weekend, to celebrate the start of National Parks Week, the Blackwell School is Marfa will screen the film “Deep in the Heart,” a documentary celebrating the wonders of Texas’ wildlife and landscapes.
The viewing will be followed by a Q&A with the film producer Katy Baldock.

Mañana Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine organiza su tercera feria anual de salud.
Durante los últimos tres años, el distrito y los estudiantes del programa de asistente de enfermería certificado de la escuela han celebrado la feria como una oportunidad para que el público reciba información de salud y recursos gratuitos.
Gayla Owens es la enfermera del distrito. Ella habló con KVLF sobre la feria de la salud. Dijo que las personas podrán controlar su presión arterial, colesterol y azúcar en sangre, entre otras cosas.
Mencionó que estaran las farmacias Highland Drug y Prescription Shop, y tendran su centro de crisis local, al igual que el departamento de salud, la clase de CNA y el club de leones.
Owens dice que el Club de Leones proporcionará anteojos a cualquiera que no pueda pagarlos. Y también aceptan anteojos que quizás ya no usen.
Habrá sorteos y obsequios en la feria y el distrito celebrará la primera promoción del programa CNA.
El año que viene, Owens dice que el programa también incluirá a estudiantes de Marfa.

El actual propietario del edificio, Billy Ivey, dijo al periódico que había estado negociando con la ciudad la venta del sitio, pero recientemente optó por un “Mejor oferta” que recibió para vender la propiedad a otra persona.
El periódico informó que Ivey y los nuevos propietarios están trabajando juntos para limpiar la propiedad, que ha recibido violaciones por parte de la ciudad. A Ivey también se le pidió que hiciera una inspección de asbesto en el sitio, lo que, según él, provocó retrasos en la limpieza.
El Departamento de Policía de Alpine y la Oficina del Jefe de Bomberos del Estado dijeron que la causa del incendio se consideró “indeterminada”.
Este fin de semana, el Departamento de Artes Visuales y Escénicas de Sul Ross continúa con la presentación del musical “Next to Normal”.
El programa cuenta la historia de una madre de los suburbios a la que le han diagnosticado un trastorno bipolar provocado por un trauma familiar pasado. Su familia lucha por hacer frente a su condición y a su propia salud mental.
Las funciones serán esta noche, viernes, sábado y domingo a las 7.30.
