A celebration of life for Oliver “Olie” Lee Bryant will be at a later date. He died Saturday in Alpine.
He was born on September 20, 1949, in Del Rio and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1967.
After high school he attended Uvalde Junior College, then was employed in the building of the Amistad Dam.
Oliver was employed with Southern Pacific Railroad in Del Rio in 1971 and retired as an Amtrak Conductor in 2009.
He met Merel Dean Walker in 1978 and they were married on February 26, 1981.
He is preceded in death by two sisters. Surviving are his wife, a sister, a brother and two grandchildren.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice in Oliver’s name.
The ribbon cutting for the Old Sheriffs Museum and Research Center will be at 11 Saturday at the Old Jail near the Jeff Davis County Courthouse.
Tours of the museum, visits with regional law enforcement personnel, regional county government officials and their families and food will be available until 2.
The facility is developing exhibits to display donated items and artifacts documenting the history of sheriffs in West Texas.
The recently-refurbished Old Jail will house exhibits, archives and memorabilia about the history of law enforcement in the tri-county region of West Texas.

Four members of the Sul Ross State University faculty have been awarded a coveted Research Enhancement Grant from the institution’s Research Council.
The Research Enhancement Grant is a competitive accolade that recognizes exceptional proposals with the potential to make significant contributions to their respective fields.
Dr. Charles Koenig was honored for “Evaluating the Role of Earth Ovens and Agave at La Junta de los Rios.”
Dr. Byron Schroeder and Dr. Devin Pettigrew got theirs for “Re-envisioning Past Big Bend Hunting: Analyzing Artifacts at the Museum of the Big Bend.”
And Dr. Yen-Hsin Chen was honored for “Why Do You Protest Against your Regime? Peasant and Worker Protests in China.”
The Research Enhancement Grant will enable faculty members to embark on ambitious research initiatives.

The City of Alpine announced the next monthly bulk pick up will occur the week of Monday, May 6, and residents must schedule their pickup with Texas Disposal Systems the week prior.
Pickups may be scheduled between Monday, April 29, to Friday, May 3 before noon. Call Texas Disposal Systems at 837-0845 to schedule your pickup.
Once the pick-up has been scheduled, place your bulk items on the curb or right of way directly in front of your home.
Do not put anything out onto the roadway, in an alley, or next to a dumpster.

La ciudad de Alpine anunció que la próxima recolección mensual a granel se realizará la semana del lunes 6 de mayo y los residentes deben programar su recolección con Texas Disposal Systems la semana anterior.
