April 10th

Transcript:

Good evening, today is Monday, April 10th, and I’m Hector Montemayor-Perez.

“The Story of Art in America” is a new documentary that will feature Alpine with interviews of several local artists and artisans for the half-hour episode.

The Amazon Prime series is in its third season and Director Christelle Bois and a small crew were in town last week to film scenes for the program.

“The Story of Art in America” explores the vitality and diversity of art in the U.S. with a focus on small and medium-sized cities outside of the “art world” mainstream.

Alpine was chosen as a filming location because of its vibrant artistic culture.

The designation of the Cultural Arts District by the Texas Commission of the Arts brought Alpine to the attention of the show’s producers.

The final selection was made after subsequent virtual meetings with representatives of the Big Bend Arts Council and Tourism Director Chris Ruggia.

The episode will highlight the work of several local artists.

They include ceramicist and muralist Pauline Hernandez, guitar builder Michael Stevens, quilter Dot Mainz and printmaker Ramon Deanda.

Museum of the Big Bend Director Mary Bones will provide history and context for arts and culture in Alpine and the wider Big Bend region.

Alpine Independent School District is attempting to increase attendance to help in their ongoing challenge of increasing funding.

Dr. Suzanne Harris, who received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sul Ross State University, has been named dean of students.

Harris graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre in 1999 and a Master of Arts in Public Administration in 2002.

She received her doctoral degree in Education Leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis.

She has worked at Sul Ross as an advising specialist, designing programs to improve student retention and success, including the development of a peer mentor program.

As the Director of Trio Student Support Services, a grant she wrote, Harris developed a student mentoring program, academic support program and supplemental instruction.

Later, Harris oversaw the remodel and construction of the Lobo Den and delivered first-year programming including learning communities and new student orientation.

She most recently served as the director for Academic Affairs in the Office of the Provost.

There, she implemented academic policies and procedures and provided assistance with operations, such as the introduction of the online bookstore.

The Alpine Gem and Mineral Show is coming up Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Alpine Civic Center.

The annual three-day show features rocks, rough and finished stones, beads and tools, as well as door prizes.

The free show from 9 to 6 each day will feature arts and culture, family fun and festivals.
