Billy Neal Gibson has passed away. He was 82, and will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and friend.
A graduate of Valentine High School in 1961, Billy carried a love for learning throughout his life. This passion extended beyond his profession; he was also an avid woodworker, showcasing his remarkable ability to create intricate designs and functional pieces from wood. His creativity and skill were a true testament to his dedication to craftsmanship.
Billy enjoyed volunteering his time and talents to help others and was known for his adventurous spirit. He relished the freedom of the open road, riding many miles on his cherished Harley Davidson motorcycle, embracing each journey.
Billy is survived by his loving wife, Ann Gibson; his three children, and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Billy Neal Gibson leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a passion for life that will forever inspire those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed but cherished in the hearts of his family and friends.
A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11 at the Gibson residence, located at 403 N. Cherry Street in Alpine.
Donations may be made in his honor to Big Bend Pets or the Alpine Humane Society.

Beginning next month, Big Bend National Park will close remote areas of the park as they begin removing a non-native species that negatively impacts the natural ecology of the region.
In a press release, park officials say the process to remove Aoudad, also known as Barbary sheep, will start October 3, and will be done in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
According to the park, the animal has established a “foothold” in the region. And as their population has grown, the non-native species has started to compete with the native desert bighorn sheep for resources and is considered an overall threat to the biodiversity of the region.

The 5th Street Gallery presents “Brushes and Knives” – an exhibit of new paintings by Carol Fairlie, opening this Friday, September 26.
The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m., and drinks and hor d’oeuvres will be served.

After a 30-year hiatus, the Moon & Tunes music festival is set to return to Fort Davis.
The lineup for the festival’s comeback includes Del Rio’s William Beckmann and Jason Boland.
Doug Moreland, a musician and Fort Davis fixture, is part of the acts for this year’s fest. He spoke to KVLF about the two-day festival
MORELAND1: “High Frontier now is a resort, it’s been transformed into the boys ranch it was. Martin: No longer for misguided youth, it’s now a beautiful location. Doug: Now it’s a beautiful retreat, and it was always in a beautiful place anyway.” (0:16)
Moreland was part of the first few Moon & Tunes festivals which took place in the mid-90s and is looking forward to being part of the festival’s return next month.
MORELAND2: “I played on it with my dad, and my dad was on there with his band. I did a little set playing the fiddle, I remember that.” (0:08)
The festival takes place October 3 and 4 at the High Frontier.

Next month, the Sul Ross State University Music Program will host an evening of classical music, featuring pianist Jae-Eun Baek and guitarist Stephen Krishnan.
The concert will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m., and will be held in the Studio Theater of the Francois Fine Arts Building on the campus in Alpine.
Admission is free and open to the public.

Esta pasión se extendía más allá de su profesión; también era un ávido carpintero, demostrando su notable habilidad para crear diseños intrincados y piezas funcionales de madera. Su creatividad y habilidad eran un verdadero testimonio de su dedicación a la artesanía.

A partir del próximo mes, el Parque Nacional Big Bend cerrará áreas remotas del parque para comenzar a eliminar una especie no nativa que impacta negativamente la ecología natural de la región.
En un comunicado de prensa, las autoridades del parque informaron que el proceso para eliminar al aoudad, también conocido como borrego cimarrón, comenzará el 3 de octubre y se realizará en colaboración con el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas.
Según el parque, el animal se ha establecido en la región. Y a medida que su población ha crecido, esta especie no nativa ha comenzado a competir con el borrego cimarrón del desierto por los recursos y se considera una amenaza general para la biodiversidad de la región.
