Melissa “Meli” Trevizo Hernandez, passed away on September 12, in Lubbock. She was 56.
Born in Alpine, Meli brought warmth and joy into the lives of all who knew her.
She was known for her vibrant spirit and contagious laugh, she had a gift for making others feel welcome and loved. Whether she was attending community events or hosting one of her beloved garage sales, Meli thrived when surrounded by people. Her cheerful nature and boundless energy made every gathering more memorable.
At the heart of Meli’s world was her family. She shared a deep and enduring bond with her husband, Rigoberto Trevizo — affectionately known as Rigo. Their connection was one of unwavering companionship; they were rarely seen apart.
Meli is also lovingly remembered by her two children, her father, her three siblings, and three grandchildren.
A woman of immense reliability and compassion, Meli lived each day with purpose — to connect with those she loved most. Her golden heart touched countless lives through simple acts of kindness that left lasting impressions.

Mexico has confirmed a case of the New World screwworm in an area less than 70 miles from the Texas-Mexico border. It’s the northernmost detection of the parasitic fly that could upend the country’s cattle and livestock industry.
That’s according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The USDA says the previous northernmost detection of the screwworm was earlier this summer in the Mexican state of Veracruz, roughly 370 miles farther south.
In the last few months, the U.S. has responded to the threat of the parasite by closing the country’s ports to cattle and other livestock imported from Mexico.
It’s also working to create two facilities in South Texas that would disperse sterile flies, which have proven to be the most effective way at reducing the spread of the screwworm.
The hope is that female screwworms–which only mate once in their life–will mate with sterile males and produce non-viable eggs until the population dies out.
For decades the parasitic fly has been contained at the border of Panama and Colombia, but broke through that barrier in 2022.

Alpine ISD is inviting the public to recommend a new name for the Alpine High School gym.
According to the district, the renaming process will be accompanied by $160,000 worth of renovations. The Wilson-Stice Court, located within the gym, will retain its name and this renaming project is intended for the gym as a whole.
The district is looking for recommendations honoring people who have made significant contributions to public education and have been standout role models for students.

The Marfa100, an annual charitable cycling race, is now open for registration. Cyclists can choose between the 100K and 50K races. Both head down a scenic stretch of ranch road 2810.
The race is Saturday, October 18. And registration is limited.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is still taking applicants for the Patricia Manning undergraduate scholarship awards.
The Patricia Rose Manning scholarship was established last year to honor Patty Manning, a long time grower of native plants in the Big Bend.
Two scholars will be awarded.
Among the application requirements: you must be a junior or senior in the fall 2025, studying full time at Sul Ross State University.
The submission deadline is the end of next month. The award date is November 15.

Melissa “Meli” Trevizo Hernández falleció el 12 de septiembre en Lubbock. Tenía 56 años.
Nacida en Alpine, Meli trajo calidez y alegría a quienes la conocieron.
Era conocida por su espíritu vibrante y su risa contagiosa; tenía el don de hacer sentir a los demás bienvenidos y queridos. Ya fuera asistiendo a eventos comunitarios o organizando una de sus queridas ventas de garaje, Meli prosperaba rodeada de gente. Su carácter alegre y su energía desbordante hacían que cada reunión fuera memorable.
En el corazón del mundo de Meli estaba su familia. Compartía un vínculo profundo y duradero con su esposo, Rigoberto Trevizo, cariñosamente conocido como Rigo. Su conexión era de compañerismo inquebrantable; rara vez se los veía separados.
Meli también es recordada con cariño por sus dos hijos, su padre, sus tres hermanos y sus tres nietos.
Una mujer de inmensa confiabilidad y compasión, Meli vivía cada día con un propósito: conectar con sus seres queridos. Su corazón dorado tocó innumerables vidas a través de simples actos de bondad que dejaron impresiones duraderas.

México ha confirmado un caso de gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo en una zona a menos de 112 kilómetros de la frontera entre Texas y México. Se trata de la detección más septentrional de esta mosca parásita, que podría revolucionar la industria ganadera del país.
Según el Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos (USDA), la detección más septentrional del gusano barrenador se produjo a principios de este verano en el estado mexicano de Veracruz, unos 600 kilómetros más al sur.
En los últimos meses, Estados Unidos ha respondido a la amenaza del parásito cerrando los puertos del país al ganado y otros animales importados de México.
También está trabajando para crear dos instalaciones en el sur de Texas que dispersarían moscas estériles, lo cual ha demostrado ser la forma más eficaz de reducir la propagación del gusano barrenador.
Se espera que las hembras del gusano barrenador, que solo se aparean una vez en su vida, se apareen con machos estériles y produzcan huevos inviables hasta que la población se extinga. Durante décadas la mosca parásita estuvo contenida en la frontera de Panamá y Colombia, pero rompió esa barrera en 2022.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine invita al público a recomendar un nuevo nombre para el gimnasio de la Escuela preparatoria de Alpine.
Según el distrito, el proceso de cambio de nombre incluirá renovaciones por un valor de $160,000. La Cancha Wilson-Stice, ubicada dentro del gimnasio, conservará su nombre y este proyecto de cambio de nombre se aplicará a todo el gimnasio.
El distrito busca recomendaciones para honrar a personas que han hecho contribuciones significativas a la educación pública y han sido ejemplos destacados para los estudiantes.

La Sección Big Bend de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de Texas aún acepta solicitudes para las becas de pregrado Patricia Manning.
La beca Patricia Rose Manning se inició el año pasado en honor a Patty Manning, cultivadora de plantas nativas en Big Bend desde hace mucho tiempo.
Se otorgarán dos becas.
