A new nonprofit in the Big Bend region aims to create and expand the paths for college and career training for high school students after graduating.
The Big Bend Rural Initiative for Success in Education, or B-B Rise, is a collaboration between the school districts in Alpine, Marathon and Marfa along with Sul Ross State University, Odessa College and the Education Partnership of the Permian Basin.
Speaking to K-V-L-F, State Sen. Cesar Blanco, who represents the region, said the idea is to work with industries that already have a footprint in the area – like cross-border trade, oil and gas, and tourism – and create opportunities for students in those fields.
BLANCO1: “The idea is to keep our talent, our youth, get em studied up, get em certified. But then have them stay here at home. They make a great living here and they add value to our communities.” (0:13)

Local artist Lori Griffin is hosting two art workshops this week on “making artful paper.”
Participants will recycle old National Geographic magazines and apply solvents that will react with the ink to create distinct art pieces.
Griffin told K-V-L-F the process can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes – and each color reacts differently with the solvent.
GRIFFIN1: “What you do is you come, you learn the techniques, you leave with a couple of the pieces that you create, the rest of them are left cause they’re going to be donated to a future workshop. But you go home with a stack of magazines, and you have the knowledge so you can recreate it.” (0:17)
The first workshop is tomorrow (THURSDAY) from 6 to 8 p.m., and another one will be Friday morning from 10 to noon. Both events happen at the Tire House Gallery on Lockhart Avenue in Alpine.

Tomorrow (THURSDAY), U.S. Customs and Border Protection will commemorate 9/11, and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day, at the Big Bend Sector’s Alpine station.
The remembrance ceremony takes place Thursday at the station’s 9/11 memorial, which features a steel artifact from the World Trade Center.
The event is open to the public and starts Thursday morning at 10.

Later this fall, head to the historic Prude Ranch in Fort Davis for the 48th annual cycle fest.
The annual event is a scenic bike tour, taking cyclists through the Davis Mountains on easy routes and challenging hills.
The tour provides three different routes at 34, 54 and 73 miles.
The race is September 21.

Later this month, country music star Aaron Watson performs at the Gallego Center in Alpine.
The event is a fundraiser for Sul Ross State University athletic facilities.
The concert is Friday, September 26 – tickets are on sale now.

A veteran resource pop-up is coming to Alpine.
On September 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., several agencies will come together to assist and provide veterans, servicemembers and their families with resources, employment opportunities and other resources.
The event takes place at the Morgan University Center at Sul Ross State University.

The lineup for next year’s Lonestar Cowboy Poetry Gathering has been released, and members can get their tickets now.
The gathering starts February 19, and over the course of three days, the event will bring together poets, musicians and storytellers from all over to honor the history and culture of cowboying – performed by those who have lived it.

La artista local Lori Griffin organiza esta semana dos talleres de arte sobre cómo “hacer papel artístico”.

GRIFFIN1: “Lo que haces es venir, aprender las técnicas, salir con un par de piezas que creas, y el resto se queda porque se donarán a un futuro taller. Pero te vas a casa con un montón de revistas y con los conocimientos necesarios para recrearlas.” (0:17)
El primer taller será mañana (jueves) de 6:00 a 8:00 h, y otro el viernes por la mañana de 10:00 a 12:00 h. Ambos eventos se celebrarán en la Galería Tire House de la avenida Lockhart en Alpine.

Mañana (JUEVES), la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de Estados Unidos conmemorará el 11 de septiembre y recordará las casi 3.000 vidas perdidas ese día en la estación Alpine del sector Big Bend.
La ceremonia conmemorativa tendrá lugar el jueves en el monumento conmemorativo del 11 de septiembre de la estación, que exhibe un artefacto de acero del World Trade Center.
El evento está abierto al público y comienza el jueves por la mañana a las 10.
Más tarde este otoño, dirígase al histórico Prude Ranch en Fort Davis para el cuadragesimo octavo 48º festival anual de ciclismo.

Un recurso emergente para veteranos llega a Alpine.
El 19 de septiembre, de 11 a. m. a 3 p. m., varias agencias se unirán para ayudar y brindar a los veteranos, miembros del servicio y sus familias recursos, oportunidades de empleo y otros recursos.
El evento se llevará a cabo en el Centro Universitario Morgan de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross.
