Monday, September 8th Morning News

Transcript:

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Alpine City Council will hold a special meeting to “conduct interviews” for the position of city manager and discuss the next steps in the hiring process.

That’s according to an agenda for the meeting.

Those discussions are set to happen in executive session, which is closed to the public.

According to the agenda for the September 9 meeting, the only other planned discussions include the usual announcements from the mayor, city council and council members, along with the mayor and city manager reports.

The special meeting takes place Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers.

You can find a copy of the meeting’s agenda online at cityofalpine.com/.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is now taking applicants for the Patricia Manning undergraduate scholarship awards.

The Patricia Rose Manning scholarship was established last year to honor Patty Manning, a long time grower of native plants in the Big Bend.

Two scholars will be awarded – one $3,000 dollar scholarship and one $4,000 dollar scholarship.

Among the application requirements: you must be a junior or senior in the fall 2025, studying full time at Sul Ross State University.

The submission deadline is October 31. The award date is November 15.

For more information, including additional requirements, email tkennedy071@gmail.com.

This weekend, head to the Fort Davis National Historic Site to learn all about plants and pollinators.

On Saturday, September 13, starting at 9 a.m. the park is inviting families for “Come-and-go Bug Roundup” activities. Then at 1 p.m., there will be a presentation on grassland pollinator research taking place at the historic site. And at 3 p.m. learn how to improve bee and butterfly habitat in your own backyard.

All activities require paid admission to the historic site.

The 80th annual Sul Ross College Rodeo is coming to Alpine at the end of the month.

From September 25 to 27, head to the S.A.L.E. arena to see the best college cowboys and cowgirls from the NIRA Lone Star Region going head-to-head.

Tickets will be available at the gate – they’re $10 for adults and $5 for children and seniors.

Admissions is free to Sul Ross students and faculty.

Next weekend, the Judd Foundation in Marfa will celebrate the reopening of Donald Judd’s architecture office.

The $3.3 million effort to restore and reconstruct the office was derailed in 2021 when a fire engulfed the building, destroying much of the interior and roof.

The building is the first major project to be finished in the arts organization’s multiyear restoration plan. It’s also one of eleven Judd-related buildings in Marfa on the National Register of Historic Places.

The reopening takes place Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21. The celebration will include programs centered on Judd’s architecture practice.

All events are free and open to the public.

Later this month, celebrate National Public Lands day by cleaning up the most iconic pockets of Big Bend Ranch State Park.

On Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, head to the park as staff and volunteers clean up a portion of River Road and some of the most popular trails in the park.

Registration is required – if you’re interested email omar.udave@tpwd.texas.gov by September 20 to sign up.

For more information and other upcoming events, head to tpwd.texas.gov and search for Big Bend Ranch State park.

Next month, the college of education at Sul Ross presents a lecture with Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 national teacher of the year.

The event – part of the Poindexter Lecture Series – will be Monday, October 20 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Espino Center.
