Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the City of Alpine is hosting a budget workshop and city council meeting.

On Tuesday, September 4, beginning at 4 p.m., the council will consider amendments to the proposed budget ahead of its official adoption.

Then, council members will have their regularly scheduled council meeting, where they’re set to discuss, among other agenda items, the proposed partnership between the City of Alpine and Alpine Independent School District over the use and maintenance of the Manuel Payne Field at Kokernot Park.

The council is also set to review and discuss – and potentially act on – the next steps in the hiring process for a city manager.

You can find the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting online at cityofalpine.com/.

A reminder, Alpine city hall is closed today (MONDAY) for the Labor Day holiday.

The Brewster County Courthouse is also closed.

Regularly working hours to resume Tuesday, September 2.

Sul Ross State University, and the Borderlands Research Institute, have announced their schedule for guided hikes up Hancock Hill this fall.

The series of hikes are led by professionals who will take you through the hike up, and along the way they’ll provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region – all while taking in stunning views of the Big Bend landscape.

The first hike of the season is Sept. 13 – and will be led by Chris Ritzi. On this hike, he’ll point out the overlooked insect life of Hancock Hill.

All events begin at 9 a.m., and take roughly two hours. The hikes are free and open to the public.

Reservations are required and can be made online at sulross.edu/guided-hikes.

For more details or information, email guidedhikes@sulross.edu.

The Terlingua Music Bash is looking for artists and donations for the event’s silent auction.

The music festival will be held later this year in October in the Terlingua Ghost Town.

The auction benefits the Mark Kneeskern Memorial Art Scholarship, which is awarded to a graduating senior of Big Bend High School that’s pursuing a fine art degree. This year’s recipient is Caitlin Staib, who will be attending Texas A&M Corpus Christi.

If you’re interested in donating an item or a service to this year’s auction, email cabin10org@gmail.com.

You can find more information at cabin10.org/scholarships.

Later this month, Sul Ross State University will host a training for people looking to begin or further a career in healthcare.

Beginning September 8, Workforce Solutions Borderplex, along with Odessa College and Big Bend Regional Medical Center, will provide certified medical assistant training for residents in the Big Bend.

This NHA-accredited program offers in-person and hybrid classes, and will be held Monday, September 8 through Thursday, September 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Course fees and tuition are fully covered through a Workforce Solutions Borderplex grant, making this opportunity accessible to qualified applicants at no cost.

Enrollment is first-come, first-served, and space is limited. An interview process will be conducted for all candidates.

Those interested should call 432-335-6580 or email conted@odessa.edu for more information.
