The Labor Day Weekend is looking like it will be a rainy one across the Big Bend with forecasters expecting potentially heavy rainfall and possibly flash flooding.
Chris Stickney is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Midland.
STICKNEY1: “Each afternoon, about 30-50 percent chance each day through this weekend and into early next week, so even into Monday and Tuesday. Chances will start to be a little lower by then, but every day through Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to see showers and storms pop up.” (0:19)
Stickney says the last two summers have been particularly dry in the Big Bend area, and that the rains we’re seeing now are actually closer to what the region typically sees.
STICKNEY2: “Even though it feels like it’s been very, very rainy, we’re actually kind of closer to an average summer. This is really just what it should look like in West Texas. We’re very very close to just an average summer.” (0:14)
After Saturday, the National Weather Service says a cold front will move into the region and we’ll see afternoon highs “tumbling down” – and generally reach the low to mid 80s.

As part of this weekend’s Marfa Lights Festival, the Marfa Athletic Booster Club is holding a 5K fun run.
The race starts at the end of Golf Course Road and ends in front of the Presidio County Courthouse.
The race begins at 8 a.m.

In Alpine this weekend, head to the Sul Ross Arena for a memorial roping event to celebrate the life of Brandon Espy.
Brandon was loved by many in Fort Davis, Alpine and throughout West Texas.
On Saturday, August 30, starting at 10 a.m., there will be a 12 slide, breakaway roping, and 10 roping – and there will also be a silent auction as well. All proceeds will go to the Brandon Espy Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Next week, join the Alpine Public Library for a fundraiser at Spicewood restaurant.
On Friday, September 5, 50 percent of the proceeds made during lunch and dinner will go toward the Alpine Public Library.
Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner from 4:30 to 9 p.m.

Migrating birds have started their journey across the country, and millions will travel across the Lone Star State in the next few months.
And from now until Nov. 30, conservationists are asking people in the Big Bend to parktake in their #LightsOutTexas campaign, by turning off unnecessary outdoor lighting from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. This will help with the birds on their migratory journey.

Next week, the City of Alpine is hosting a budget workshop and city council meeting.
On Tuesday, September 4, beginning at 4 p.m., the council will consider amendments to the proposed budget ahead of its official adoption.
Then, council members will have their regularly scheduled council meeting, where they’re set to discuss, among other agenda items, the proposed partnership between the City of Alpine and Alpine Independent School District over the use and maintenance of the Manuel Payne Field at Kokernot Park.
The council is also set to review and discuss – and potentially act on – the next steps in the hiring process for a city manager.

Las aves migratorias han comenzado su viaje a través del país y millones viajarán a través del Estado de la Estrella Solitaria en los próximos meses.
