Tomorrow, officials with Brewster County will hold a public hearing on both the proposed budget and tax rate for the county.
That public hearing’s set to start at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Courthouse, and immediately following, county commissioners will hold their regularly scheduled meeting.
Following the public hearing, county commissioners will hold commissioners court, where they’re set to discuss and potentially adopt the budget for fiscal year 2026.
Commissioners will also consider approving Cynthia Cox as the new Brewster County Elections Administrator. The move comes nearly two months after the county’s previous elections administrator, Melissa Bergstrom, was arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Presidio County Historical Commission will unveil a new historical marker in the region.
The sign – just northwest of Highway 67 – tells the history of the Native Peoples of La Junta de los Rios, a part of the region that now includes the cities of Presidio and Ojinaga. In part, the marker tells of the Indigenous presence in the region, which goes back thousands of years. Today, descendants of these native groups continue to live in the area – although in far fewer numbers.
The unveiling of the marker takes place tomorrow (TUESDAY) at 7 p.m., just west of FM 170 and Northwest of U.S. 67.

As part of this weekend’s Marfa Lights Festival, the Marfa Athletic Booster Club is holding a 5K run.
The race starts at the end of Golf Course Road and ends in front of the Presidio County Courthouse.

The group Mobile Comunidad is looking for a part-time lunch director for Fort Davis schools.
The person in the role will oversee Mobile Comunidad’s school lunch program and ensure the safe, timely, and consistent preparation and delivery of meals to Fort Davis ISD students.
Some qualifications for the role include food service experience and knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.

The Big Bend Arts Council is now selecting works for its next gallery show.
“Delicious…All about Food” is a veritable smorgasbord of art relating to food – and you can catch it at the Big Bend Gallery beginning next month.
Artists looking to submit work to the show must do so before September 9.
A reception will be Friday, September 12, from 5 to 7 at 121 W. Holland Ave.

Next month, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 39th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear,
The opening weekend for the event will be Sept. 18 through the 20, and will feature a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction. This year, the Museum celebrates watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 1, giving visitors a chance to view and purchase exceptional works of Western art and craftsmanship.

The Marfa100, an annual charitable cycling race, is now open for registration. Cyclists can choose between the 100K and 50K races. Both head down a scenic stretch of ranch road 2810.
The race is Saturday, October 18. And registration is limited.

Mañana la Comisión Histórica del Condado de Presidio develará un nuevo marcador histórico en la región.
El letrero, ubicado justo al noroeste de la Carretera 67, narra la historia de los pueblos indígenas de La Junta de los Ríos, una parte de la región que ahora incluye las ciudades de Presidio y Ojinaga. En parte, el marcador da cuenta de la presencia indígena en la región, que se remonta a miles de años. Hoy en día, los descendientes de estos grupos indígenas continúan viviendo en la zona, aunque en un número mucho menor.
La develación del marcador tendrá lugar mañana a las 7 p. m., justo al oeste de la FM 170 y al noroeste de U.S. 67.
