Laurencio, known as “Lencho” by everyone, was born in 1934 in Boquilla de San Isidro, Chihuahua, Mexico.
Lencho came to this country to work as a vaquero through the Bracero program. He worked for more than 50 years on the Espy ranch in their wool and mohair operations. Lencho later worked for the McKnight Ranch.
Lencho is survived by his two sons, two grandchildren, and five siblings.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 29 at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Davis, Texas.

Next week the Presidio County Historical Commission will unveil a new historical Marker in the region.
The sign – just northwest of Highway 67 – tells the history of the Native Peoples of La Junta de los Rios, a part of the region stretching across what are now the cities of Presidio and Ojinaga. In part, the marker tells of the Indigenous presence in the region, which goes back thousands of years. Today, descendants of these native groups continue to live in the area.
The unveiling of the marker takes place Tuesday, August 26 at 7 p.m., just west of FM 170 and Northwest of U.S. 67.

Next week the Big Bend Community Chorale begins rehearsals for their fall-winter concert, tentatively scheduled for early December.
Rehearsals start Monday, August 25 at 6 p.m. at the SRSU Fine Arts building in the choir room.
Rehearsals will continue every Monday until the week of the performances.

The Alpine Public Library is currently hosting a “mask competition” fundraiser. There are no rules and you can pick up a mask to decorate, free of charge, at the library all this month.
The masks can be decorated any way you want and with anything you want. The library asks you return your designed mask by November 1 to the library, where they will be on display and up for bids at the library’s silent auction.

Mobile Comunidad is looking for a part-time lunch director for Fort Davis schools.
The position oversees the Mobile Comunidad’s school lunch program, ensuring the safe, timely, and consistent preparation and delivery of nutritious meals to Fort Davis ISD students.
Some qualifications for the role include food service experience and knowledge of food safety and sanitation standards.

The Big Bend Arts Council is now selecting works for its next gallery show.
“Delicious…All about Food” is a veritable smorgasbord of art relating to food – and you can catch it at the Big Bend Gallery beginning next month.
Artists looking to submit work to the show must do so before September 9.
A reception will be Friday, September 12, from 5 to 7 at 121 W. Holland Ave.

Next month, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 39th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear,
The opening weekend for the event will be Sept. 18 through the 20, and will feature a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction. This year, the Museum celebrates watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 1, giving visitors a chance to view and purchase exceptional works of Western art and craftsmanship.

Laurencio Hernández Adame, de Fort Davis, falleció. Tenía 90 años.
Laurencio, también conocido por todos como “Lencho”, nació en 1934 en Boquilla de San Isidro, Chihuahua, México.
Lencho llegó a este país para trabajar como vaquero a través del programa Bracero. Trabajó durante más de 50 años en el rancho Espy, en sus operaciones de lana y mohair. Posteriormente, trabajó para el rancho McKnight.
A Lencho le sobreviven sus dos hijos, dos nietos y cinco hermanos.
Los servicios se llevarán a cabo a las 11:00 a. m. del viernes 29 de agosto en la Iglesia Católica San José en Fort Davis, Texas.

La próxima semana, la Comisión Histórica del Condado de Presidio presentará un nuevo marcador histórico en la región.
El letrero, ubicado justo al noroeste de la Carretera 67, narra la historia de los pueblos indígenas de La Junta de los Ríos, una parte de la región que se extiende por lo que hoy son las ciudades de Presidio y Ojinaga. En parte, el letrero da cuenta de la presencia indígena en la región, que se remonta a miles de años. Hoy en día, los descendientes de estos grupos indígenas siguen viviendo en la zona.
La inauguración del marcador tendrá lugar el martes 26 de agosto a las 7 p.m., justo al oeste de FM 170 y al noroeste de la U.S. 67.

La próxima semana, el Coro Comunitario de Big Bend comienza los ensayos para su concierto de otoño-invierno, programado tentativamente para principios de diciembre.
Los ensayos comienzan el lunes 25 de agosto a las 6 p. m. en el edificio de Bellas Artes de SRSU en la sala del coro.
Los ensayos continuarán todos los lunes hasta la semana de las funciones.

La Biblioteca Pública de Alpine está organizando un concurso de mascarillas para recaudar fondos. No hay reglas y puede recoger una mascarilla para decorar, gratis, en la biblioteca durante todo este mes.
Las máscaras se pueden decorar como quiera y con lo que quiera. La biblioteca pide que devuelva la máscara diseñada antes del 1ro de noviembre, donde se exhibirá y se podrá en la subasta silenciosa.
