Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Alpine City Council meets. Among other agenda items, the council is set to review and discuss the pool of applicants for the city manager position – in hopes of narrowing down the list of candidates for consideration.
The city manager position is currently being filled by city secretary Geo Calderon.
At the last city council meeting, officials decided to come together on their list of preferred candidates before the city’s department directors move forward with interviews.
The council meets Tuesday, August 19 at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, Sul Ross State University will hold its last student orientation before the start of the school year. If you’re entering the university, get ready to kickstart your journey at “Sully Start Up” – where you’ll meet fellow students, explore campus and discover what opportunities you might have at Sul Ross.

Next month, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 39th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear,
The opening weekend for the event will be Sept. 18 through the 20, and will feature a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction. This year, the Museum celebrates watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 1, giving visitors a chance to view and purchase exceptional works of Western art and craftsmanship.

Later this fall, the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects has several events coming up.
In September, the group will host a state of education panel at the Espino Center at Sul Ross State University. Then in October they’ll bring volunteers together for the first planting day in the front yard of the old schoolhouse!
And in November, they’ll host a demonstration on preserving brick-buildings – that will be November 8 at the nonprofit’s headquarters at 205 E. Sul Ross Ave.

Sul Ross State University, and the Borderlands Research Institute, have announced their schedule for guided hikes up Hancock Hill this fall.
The series of hikes are led by professionals who will take you through the hike up, and along the way they’ll provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region – all while taking in stunning views of the Big Bend landscape.
The first hike of the season is Sept. 13 – and will be led by Chris Ritzi. On this hike, he’ll point out the overlooked insect life of Hancock Hill.
All events begin at 9 a.m., and take roughly two hours. The hikes are free and open to the public.
Reservations are required and can be made online at sulross.edu/guided-hikes.

La Universidad Estatal Sul Ross y el Instituto de Investigación de Borderlands han anunciado su programa de caminatas guiadas por Hancock Hill este otoño.
Esta serie de caminatas está dirigida por profesionales que te acompañarán durante el ascenso y, a lo largo del camino, te brindarán información sobre el terreno y la vida silvestre de la región, mientras disfrutas de impresionantes vistas del paisaje de Big Bend.
La primera caminata de la temporada es el 13 de septiembre y estará dirigida por Chris Ritzi. En esta caminata, te mostrará la fauna de Hancock Hill, que suele pasar desapercibida.
