The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced new measures to help combat the spread of a parasitic fly that could severely disrupt Texas’ cattle industry.
Those measures include a $750 million dollar facility in Edinburg, Texas, that will produce sterile screwworm flies. The hope is that female screwworms–which only mate once in their life–will mate with sterile males and produce non-viable eggs until the population dies out.
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins:
ROLLINS1: “It’s a tactical move that ensures that we are prepared and not just reactive, which is to date what we have really been working through.” (0:08)

Construction on the facility is expected to take a year. It joins a separate facility currently being built at Moore Air Base in Edinburg.
The New World screwworm embeds its larvae into the living flesh of animals and humans – and decades ago, it wreaked havoc on the state.
It had been eradicated from the U.S., but has recently been detected as close as 370 miles from the Texas-Mexico border.
