Earlier today (TUESDAY), officials with Brewster County discussed the county’s budget for the 2026 fiscal year.
During the discussion, County Judge Greg Henington said, the current proposed budget would see the county adopting a deficit budget — which the county will hold a public hearing for on August 26.
HENINGTON1: “So this is kind of where you’re going to end up on the 26th is, unless something dramatic changes, we will have a deficit budget or M&O. Yes it’s a deficit but we have surplus in LATCF funds to take it from.” (0:19)
Over the last few weeks, officials have worked on refining the budget and have chipped away at the overall deficit. Henginton told commissioners that payroll was the area where the county was able to shore things up the most and found “savings.”
The hearing for the budget will start at 9:30 in the morning on August 26. It will be followed by a hearing on the tax rate

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), the Department of Public Safety, along with Border Patrol, are holding a mass casualty response training in Alpine. The exercise is part of an effort to improve emergency preparedness across the region.
Speaking to K-V-L-F, Jonathan Rutledge, a sergeant with DPS, said the training will bring together Alpine PD, county sheriffs, emergency services and federal agencies too.
The agencies will be responding to a simulated mass casualty.
RUTLEDGE1: “We’ve gotten all of them to participate cause just think of who will be responding to this? Everybody. So we can work together and train and practice, then whenever this could happen in real life, we are already just doing what we’ve already practiced and trained.” (0:15)
The training takes place tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) at Sul Ross University, beginning at 8 a.m.
DPS is still looking for volunteers to “role play” as victims during the training. If you’re interested, you can show up tomorrow morning at the Morgan University Center on campus.

This weekend, the Big Bend chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold a presentation on tree care at the Alpine Public Library.
On Saturday at 1 p.m., James Tuttle with Tree Loving Care will talk about tree trimming and pruning and disease and pest management. The event is open to the public, you do not need to be a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas to attend.

Later this month, two nonprofits are coming together to host a free pet clinic in Terlingua, where they’ll spay, neuter, microchip and vaccinate your pets.
The event, hosted by the Alpine Humane Society and Operation Kindness, will offer surgical and wellness services at no charge and heartworm tests and flea and tick products will have a nominal fee.
The groups are looking for assistance with the event – they need donations to help subsidize the services, lodging for 11 volunteers, meals, and help bringing kennels and supplies from Alpine to Terlingua and back.
They’re also looking for ice, water and cold drinks and help with advertising.

Next month, the Museum of the Big Bend will host the 39th Annual Trappings of Texas, the nation’s longest-running exhibit and sale dedicated to Western art and custom cowboy gear,
The opening weekend for the event will be Sept. 18 through the 20, and will feature a lineup of events, from live demonstrations and parties to a live auction. This year, the Museum celebrates watercolorist Tim Oliver as the 2025 Trappings of Texas premier artist.
The exhibit will remain on display through Nov. 1, giving visitors a chance to view and purchase exceptional works of Western art and craftsmanship.
