Monday, August 11th Morning News

Transcript:

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say cooler temps are on the way to West Texas thanks to a slight cold front moving through the region.

Afternoon highs this week will largely range from the mid 80s to the mid 90s – and forecasters say today (MONDAY) we’ll see the best chance for thunderstorms, mainly in the Davis Mountains, pockets of the Big Bend and the Permian Basin as well.

On Tuesday, Brewster County leaders will meet for the next county commissioners meeting. And on the agenda are items related to the upcoming county budget.

Commissioners are set to review and discuss and potentially take action on the proposed Brewster County budget for 2026, which they’ll also consider scheduling a public hearing for.

Other discussions include department updates – and a presentation from the Marathon Public Library.

The commissioner’s meeting is Tuesday, August 12 at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Courthouse.

You can find a full agenda at brewstercounty.gov.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), head to the Davis Mountains State Park to take in the perseid meteor shower.

The major summer meteor shower, which will see shooting stars dash across the nighttime sky, will peak on Tuesday, August 12. And you can catch the celestial show that day, from 10 to 11 p.m., at the far end of the Skyline Drive at the Davis Mountains State Park.

During the event, park rangers will also point out constellations in view and share other tidbits about stars and the vastness of space.

The event is free for campers or Indian Lodge guests. Day passes are $6 per adult, or free for the carload with an active state park pass.

You can find more information and events coming up at the Davis Mountains State Park website.

This weekend, the Big Bend chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold a presentation on tree care at the Alpine Public Library.

On Saturday at 1 p.m., James Tuttle with Tree Loving Care will talk about tree trimming and pruning and disease and pest management. The event is open to the public, you do not need to be a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas to attend.
