Tomorrow evening (TUESDAY), Alpine officials are set to discuss the next steps for hiring a permanent city manager. The agenda for Tuesday’s city council meeting shows the council will go over the interview process for the position, which, according to the city, several candidates have applied for.
The discussion comes roughly two months after former city manager Megan Antrim stepped down from the role. In that time, Geo Calderon, the city secretary, has been working as the interim city manager.
During tomorrow’s (TUESDAY’S) meeting, the council will also receive the usual department updates, including a report from the director of tourism.
The council meets Tuesday, August 5 at 5:30.

This week, several churches in Alpine are coming together to host a backyard bible club at Kokernot Park.
The event started Monday and continues through August 7. During the four-day event, Hillside Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Fuenta de Vida Assembly Church welcome boys and girls, in kindergarten through 5th grade, to head to the park for daily bible lessons.
Each morning will begin at 9 a.m. and run to noon.
The theme for this year’s event is “magnified” – there will be music, bible stories and puppet shows.
Pizza and lemonade will be provided for all Backyard Bible Club participants and their parents along with a short program of music and Bible verses. There is no charge. For more information, call Karen McGuire at 432-386-3071.

Local artist Chris Ruggia has announced the winners of his Big Bend Black Bear Weekend giveaway. To celebrate the event’s second anniversary, Chris raffled off some of his original bear paintings and drawings.
Gail Bielitz won a painting of Sheela, a bear that’s part of the Borderlands Research Institute’s bear study. And Austin Huffman won the complete set of seven 8×10” prints of black bear drawings.

On Saturday, head to the Davis Mountains State Park to practice your bow and arrow skills at this one-day program open to all ability levels.
The event is recommended for children in grades 4 and up and adults too. Parents must be present with their child during the program.
If interested, meet at the group picnic area in the park, and make sure to bring water and a hat.
The archery fun starts at 10 a.m. and continues into the afternoon at 3.

This weekend, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

Sul Ross State University has opened registration for student orientation. If you’re entering the university, get ready to kickstart your journey at “Sully Start Up” – where you’ll meet fellow students, explore campus and discover what opportunities you might have at Sul Ross.

El evento comenzó el lunes y continuará hasta el 7 de agosto.
