The National Weather Service says a heatwave is on the way for much of West Texas – starting this weekend.
Forecasters say we can expect temperatures to climb into the 90s in much of the Big Bend area – while the Permian Basin will see highs reach the 100s.
When temperatures soar to sweltering levels, remember to limit your time outside if possible – and drink plenty of water and wear light clothing and sunscreen too.
At next week’s city council meeting, Alpine officials are set to discuss the next steps for hiring a permanent city manager. The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting shows the council will go over the interview process for the position — which, according to the city, several candidates have applied for.
The council will also receive the usual department updates, including a report from the director of tourism.
The council meets Tuesday, August 5 at 5:30.

Next week, Brewster County officials are set to hold a special commissioners meeting – and on the agenda are several items related to the elections department.
Commissioners will consider creating a part-time position with the elections department until they’re able to fill the position permanently. They’re also set to discuss allowing the county clerk to take on the responsibility of administering elections until the position is filled.
The meeting comes as the county officials placed the previous election administrator, Melissa Bergstrom, on paid administrative leave. Bergstrom was arrested in July for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from the booster club for the Alpine High School band.
Bergstrom has submitted her resignation to the county – which commissioners accepted. Her last day with the county will coincide with the end of her paid administrative leave, and will be August 22.

The local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects has several events this month – and you can participate.
On August 7, starting at 5:30, the group will host a potluck dinner at their office, located at 205 E. Sul ross Ave. Then in September, the group will host a state of education panel at the Espino Center at Sul Ross State University.

Next weekend, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.

Next week, several churches in Alpine are coming together to host a backyard bible club at Kokernot Park.
From August 4 to August 7, Hillside Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Fuente de Vida Assembly Church welcome boys and girls, in kindergarten through 5th grade, to head to the park for daily bible lessons. Each morning will begin at 9 a.m. and run to noon.
The theme for this year’s event is “magnified” – there will be music, bible stories and puppet shows.
Pizza and lemonade will be provided for all Backyard Bible Club participants and their parents along with a short program of music and Bible verses. There is no charge. For more information, or to pre-register your child or children, call Karen McGuire at 432-386-3071.
